NCAA First Two Rounds

Yes, I know that Tennessee's stats aren't very good, hence the 7 seed. But it still doesn't seem just, since they are playing as well right now as 2 and 3 seeds. How a team is playing recently should be taken into account, if it isn't. Also, there's always the eye test.

The committee does look at a team's last ten games; Tennessee went 5-5. In last Saturday's game against South Carolina, they were down 23 points late in the second quarter before mounting their comeback; still down 12 points to start the fourth quarter.

While I too think we will be one of the top 2 seeds, I just want to point out again that SOS is factored into the net rankings. And SOS actually has been a poor indicator of tournament success as found in a study of the men’s game: Make your schedule too tough, and you’ll likely be watching the later rounds of the NCAA tournament from home. Not sure if there is a similar study for WBB.

Plus, the more you win, the more damage (only slightly) you do to your own strength of schedule. And number of wins is more important than SOS so if you schedule too tough the losses that could occur are worse than the increased SOS.

We have a Net ranking of 3 despite our SOS. The women’s committee says they are looking at the following factors:

  1. Bad losses
  2. Common opponents
  3. Competitive in losses
  4. Conference record
  5. Early vs later performance
  6. Head-to-head
  7. Net Ranking
  8. Non conference record
  9. Overall record
  10. Regional rankings
  11. Significant wins
  12. Strength of schedule
  13. And my lease favorite: observable components
That last one basically gives them the opportunity to do whatever the hell they want at the top.

Funny enough, the Net Ranking really covers all but three of those components.

Since the last reveal was February 29th (the day after we lost at OU), the only thing I can go by as far as projections is Creme's bracketology. Despite that loss, the committee bumped us up two spots to #6 overall. We haven't loss since then and did gain a win over Top 15-20 KSU. But, it's important to look at what the other teams vying for #1 & 2 seeds did since then.

1) South Carolina (SEC): went undefeated and beat Top 10 LSU in SEC championship
2) Ohio State (B1G): lost at Top 10 Iowa; got blitzed by Maryland in B1G quarterfinals
3) Stanford (PAC): beat Top 16 Oregon State; lost to Top 10 USC in PAC championship. Don't think the committee will drop them out of Top 4.
4) UCLA (PAC): beat Top 20 Utah; lost to Top 10 USC in PAC semi-finals. Their overall resume' is very good.
5) Virginia Tech (ACC): lost at Top 16 Notre Dame; lost at Virginia; lost to Notre Dame by 29 points in ACC semi-finals. Should fall out of Top 8.
6) Texas (Big 12): see above
7) Iowa (B1G): beat Top 10 Ohio State; beat marginal Top 25 Nebraska in B1G championship. I ask myself if that is enough for the committee to vault them up to #2 like Creme has done.
8) USC (PAC): beat Top 10 UCLA in PAC semi-finals; beat Top 5 Stanford in PAC championship. Should definitely move up. How high?
9) LSU (SEC): lost to #1 South Carolina in SEC championship

All I know is I’m just plain excited knowing Texas will do no worse than a #2 seed and are in the conversation for a #1 seed. Did not fathom that at the beginning of this year knowing it would be without Rori.

Ready to study the 2024 Bracket and receive my first and second rounds tix for Austin. Been going thru WBB withdrawals since Tuesday night’s championship game.

I haven't studied this like some of you all have, and don't know teams' records very well. But just from the eye test, I wish we would be in the bracket with Stanford. I don't think they are that good this year. They looked flat out awful against USC in the PAC-12 final. I think our defense would give them fits. I agree with Moooooo, I question Iowa's being up there at #2 like Creme has them. I think it would be an interesting challenge to go against the media-decided best player in the world. I agree, I wouldn't be real happy to be in UConn's bracket. But, heck, whatever it is, bring it on. We should do well.

Definitely agree with that. This team has overachieved in the regular season when you consider how many players have missed games due to injury, and how many different lineups there have been. Other than one game here or there which cost us the regular season title, this team has stayed on track with its goals. Mostly excited that we seem to be playing our best basketball of the season on offense and defense, and we have momentum for the stretch run.

Stanford, USC or Texas for the final No. 1 spot?
The Cardinal have a regular-season championship in the country's highest-rated conference. USC won the Pac-12 tournament title. Texas came up short of first place in the regular-season race but won the tournament in the Big 12, the nation's second-highest rated league. The Longhorns have the top NET ranking of the three. The Trojans have the most top-25 NET wins. Stanford has the most in the top 50.

It's that close among these three teams, but there are only two remaining No. 1 seed slots after South Carolina and Iowa. Someone must be a No. 2 seed.

The reason Texas likely is the odd team out comes down to nonconference schedule strength. The high value placed on how a team schedules is the one consistent marker for the NCAA tournament selection committee over the past few seasons, even as members change from year to year. The Longhorns rank 159th in nonconference schedule. USC ranks 93rd, Stanford 46th. While Texas played -- and convincingly beat -- UConn and Arizona, every other nonconference game was against teams outside the NET top 100.

Am at the watch party with the team. Players seem healthy and happy. Got a nice round of applause when seated for cameras. Nice crowd here to support them. Haven’t done this before myself. Pretty fun. Vic shaking hands and being a very gracious host.

Is Tionna Herron there? I'm guessing no. Find out what you can!

Guess they were wrong. Texas did do enough to earn a one seed and the committee agreed.

I’d say about 200 fans here. Team’s backs are to me so can’t see if Herron is here. I’ll keep looking. After dancing they all immediately went heads down to their phones! LOL

They gave us a back-handed compliment of "Well, it's a case of what have you done for me lately" to explain Texas' move to #1.

Lobo had to say nice things because we spanked her beloved Huskies.

Vic is talking to crowd now. He said the team had great practices this week and he is feeling good.

Dumb question, but they changed the tournament format a few years ago right? So that the first 2 rounds are hosted by the #1 and #2 teams in a region. But for the next 2 rounds (Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight) they're held at neutral sites.

So in this case, the most we would see is two games in Moody and then the whole circus shifts to Portland, OR right?

And this year only if Portland State or Albany State had been somehow #1 would they have stayed in their home arena through the playoffs until the finals? (I'm just making an example - don't @ me about those teams).

Sorry with COVID and the format changed, I lost track of the 3rd and 4th round. And since I'm a volleyball ticket holder, I'm still used to the Horns (usually) hosting everything leading up to a final 4 berth.

Lobo was extremely complimentary from the studio during our game against Iowa State on Tuesday. I think she's wonderful.

She does appreciate defense and we certainly put on a defensive clinic in the B12 championship game. Think most people who saw that game were impressed with our defense and with Madison. Someone - Charlie, maybe? - said JuJu is the next big star. So I guess we can get ready for non-stop promotions for Her and Paige. Sigh.
