Speaking of the long decline of Argentina: At the previous turn of the century (1900) there was a saying: "As wealthy as an Argentine." (and it was not sarcastic).
Makes sense. The name itself Argentina means a place of silver. Their main river the Rio Plate references silver as well. It is rich in natural resources. But government intervention like regulation, labor unions, consumer protection. and central banking ruined it.
