Chairman Deng was no pussycat. He was with Mao in that great march, and participated in massive genocides like the "great leap forward" (off a cliff...).

However, Deng was smart enough and not-too-stubborn to recognize that strict Marxist/Socialist economics simply did not work. So he set about to phase in market reforms. He's one of the World's most important men in the 2nd half of the 20th Century.
