Whataburger Sold to Chicago Investment Firm

What I liked most about DQ as a kid (other than the soft serve ice cream dipped in the fast drying liquid chocolate) was that they would have this big rectangular box freezer full of push ups and other frozen treats. One of those with the sliding glass top. We’d each get to pick one frozen treat.

Any competitor could get the kids to lobby their parents to stop at their hamburger joint if they’d just install one of those freezers.

Interesting that Dairy Queen is from Illinois. I always associated it with Texas.
I seem to recall reading (many years ago) that the advertising for DQ in Texas is markedly different from the advertising in all the other states. Heaven knows, DQ is a fixture in a multitude of Texas towns.

Although: last year Texas Monthly had an article about DQ franchisees pulling out of small towns in the Texas Panhandle, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
A Farewell to Dairy Queens

Well maybe they'll get a better source for their beef and stop serving up such overly fat and greasy meat.

Y'all just need to simma down na! I'm going to have faith that they won't change the food itself. Fact is, no one outside of Texas really knows or cares about Whataburger. So, if they want to grow the brand into new markets, a "fresh" concept and design is probably a good thing.

Well I have to tell you when I made my 1st trip to Mobile, AL to check out one of my old companies plants the Plant Manager was real giddy when starts talking up Whataburger for lunch. He was pretty disappointed when I told him no thanks, you can only go there so many times.

That's true. I didn't want to have Whataburger or barbecue as much when I actually still lived in Texas.

Whataburger expanding to the Nashville area and also Huntsville, Alabama. Now if we can get some decent TexMex, I will never move back to Texas.

Oh dear Lawd, let it hit it northeast Illinois.

We have Chuy’s and Uncle Julio’s here. Hoping for the hat trick.

We have Chuy’s and UJ. Not a fan of UJ and the Chuy’s chains are not very good in my opinion.

Why are you settling for mediocrity?

And yes, we have UJ near the house and mom hit top tier status there, but it leaves much to be desired for anything other than being an average plate. She was also less than thrilled when they changed the Noble Rita and downgraded the recipe.

It’s the best I can get in the crap hole of northeastern Illinois.

I have to agree- we are missing some good Tex-Mex up here in Chicagoland. Lots of 'Mexican Food' here but it is more authentic Michoacan food. I honestly can't stand the UJ chain. It has me confused because growing up, I loved the original location on Lemmon in Dallas and the next Uncle Julio's in Fort Worth off Camp Bowie. But looking back I wonder if I just had too many margarita's waiting 2 hours on a table so I really never knew how good or bad the food was there.

I spent a lot of time and had a lot of margaritas at that location.

Have you been to Station One in Plainfield for barbecue? It is exceptional.

In the late 70s I dated the daughter of the VP of Whataburger, he used to give me gold VP cards which my friends and I could order anything for free. I thought I was in heaven.
