Transfer Portal 2024

I'm interested to see who transfers OUT of Baton Rouge.
It's difficult to escape...

We did recruit Kyla Oldacre out of high school. Not sure if it's been injuries, but she's been disappointing at Miami (FL)

My view of Texas and the portal has been changing the last couple of weeks. I have high hopes for the incoming freshmen guards, but they will be freshmen. It is pretty clear that Gisella and Jak will have to improve a lot over the next nine or so months to be reliable guards for Texas. And I don’t think we want to enter the SEC season with perimeter players expected to play 37 plus minutes a game. So, what about Taliyah Scott? 3 years of eligibility left, but plenty of minutes logged as a freshman in the SEC. Texas did recruit Scott out of high school. Also like incoming freshman guard, Imari Berry, who decommitted from Clemson.

On another note, the rumors are strong that Kentucky will soon hire Kenny Brooks away from Virginia Tech. Could Kentucky go from a supplier of portal entrants to a destination school?

I've been reading that Taliyah Scott might be headed to LSU.

If we add a transfer guard, I think it will be someone with just one season of eligibility remaining. Otherwise, assuming Rori gets a fifth season for 2025-26, crowding the backcourt with another multi-year backcourt player could jeopardize the chances of landing 2025 Aaliyah Chavez.

Ah. Another thought. We may be hampered in portal recruiting if we actually wait for players to enter before recruiting them. One has to wonder with some of the quick commitments.

Edit to add — I do not see LSU mentioned in recruiting stories before she committed to Arkansas. I could see that making a difference, if there was a strong previous relationship.

I don’t follow the recruiting process closely, but don’t you have to wait until they enter the portal? I’m not sure how you would recruit if they haven’t.

Well, yes. You are not allowed to contact players before they enter the portal. And I expect our staff to follow the rules. I was simply wondering if following the rules is giving Texas a late start on recruiting some portal players. Sour grapes I guess. Mulkey already had a top recruit out of the portal in about 48 hours max after the portal opened.

Wolfenbarger had quit the Arkansas team like months ago. It makes sense that her family or former club/high school coaches had been interacting with possible future college coaches way before she was able to officially enter the transfer portal. I vaguely remember that she actually had entered the portal months ago (before the official window which provides automatic eligibility for one-time transfers opened), but then withdrew her name (after probably realizing waiting for the official window to open was the best option to not jeopardizing instant eligibility).

I get that several on here love to dump on Mulkey; but, I doubt LSU was the only program that had been in contact with Jersey's inner circle.

As for LSU specifically, they signed zero 2024 high school recruits in November; and, they already have a very small roster. They will probably add at least 5 incoming transfers and able to offer starter minutes at several positions, especially if Reese and Van Lith declare for the WNBA, as expected; both went through Senior Day ceremonies.

This is football related but you know it's happening across all sports.

I love Lee and other high school guard. I’m with Mooo on freshman growing pains. An experienced guard transfer is mandatory for next year. Schaefer always says you win championships with guard play. With Harmon and Booker and Lee and perhaps Holle, guard play would be good. Still one experienced quick shooting guard short. I like THIS year’s team and guard play. I’m just hoping the guard matchup problems don’t become the critical factor. Concerned with Gonzaga. Not as much with Stanford.

Why? Assuming Rori can play from the start of the season (which is definitely not a given, but looks possible right now) we will have Rori, Maddie, Maul, Codio, and the freshmen. I think another would be more of a luxury than a necessity.

I'm probably just being picky about the particular language you used, and not with the overall roster assessment.

A luxury more than a necessity is IMO perfectly stated. I think we'll be in much greater need for a physical, active 5 with size to replace Hadi (but more skilled offensively).

Me too, and the first reason is Taylor's ongoing injury issues. I wish to see her healthy and competing all year, but I wouldn't bet much that my wish will come true.

Looks Texas men's hoopster, Dillon Mitchell will enter the transfer portal. For those who don't remember, he was the boyfriend of Jordana Codio when they were both at Montverde Academy and arrive at Texas two years ago. Have no idea if they are still a couple. If they are still together, definitely will need to keep an eye on Codio as far as her future at Texas.

In the 1st 2 days, the leaders for the "Titanic Award" are Sacramento State and Arkansas State - each with 7 players in the Portal. It's a close race with 6 other teams just 1 player behind them. Of the Power 5 schools, the highest number is 5 so far (Kentucky & Clemson).
Moorehead State comes charging up the backstretch - 10 players in the Portal.

Power 5: Kentucky and Okie Lite sitting at 6.

ESPN's Top 10 Players in the Portal:
  1. Grad PG Kaitlyn Chen, Princeton
  2. Sr. F Ajae Petty, Kentucky
  3. Fr. G Taliah Scott, Arkansas
    • With 29 and 25 points in her first two college games, Scott was in the same conversation as JuJu Watkins, Hannah Hidalgo, MiLaysia Fulwiley and Madison Booker. The scoring remained (22.1 PPG), but the efficiency dipped and the turnovers rose. Injuries cost Scott some games in January, and then she ended her season in mid-February, citing family reasons before leaving the program altogether.
  4. So. G Saylor Poffenbarger, Arkansas
    • Like Scott, Poffenbarger entered the portal last Monday, the day it opened. The SEC's second-leading rounder (behind Angel Reese) at 11.2 RPG and the nation's second-leading defensive rebounder (9.4), she will be moving to her third school (she played 12 games at UConn in 2021). Her offensive production faded at the end of the season (7.0 PPG in the last eight games), but Poffenbarger is also a solid defender who has two more years of eligibility.
  5. Sr. G Maddie Scherr, Kentucky
  6. Sr. G Eniya Russell, Kentucky
  7. Sr. PG Mama Dembele, Missouri
    • Dembele's first three years at Missouri produced little, but scoring (10.2 PPG) and assists (6.5 APG) more than doubled this season. Her assists and steals (3.3 SPG) were each good for sixth in the country, and Dembele made the SEC all-defensive team. Her outside shooting has improved but is still a hole in Dembele's game. She will need to take better care of the ball at her next stop (3.4 turnovers per game).
  8. So. G Kailyn Gilbert, Arizona
  9. Jr. G Izzy Higginbottom, Arkansas State --> Committed to Arkansas
  10. Sr. G Terren Ward, Georgia Southern

I think she could definitely help us. If the coaches think so too, I hope we can get a foot in the door. I'm sure she will be getting a lot of offers.
