Texas @ OU 02/28/2024

I thought we played really well until the 4th quarter when we lost our legs to play defense or offense. Losing Amo, and Amina on fouls ammo did not help. It seems that we don't have enough depth at guard to give our starters a rest before going into fourth quarter, especially if we are trying to play full press, and man to man defense the whole game. Their 3 pt. shooters started getting open when they pushed the transition offense faster than our defense could get set. We should have much better depth next year with Rori back, and two highly ranked guards coming into the program.

Agreed. I think we defended OU as well as our current roster of players is capable of. We created a lot of misses with our defense that should have resulted in empty possessions for OU, but too many times we gave them extra opportunities to score.

Agreed. Rori gave them absolute fits last season and they had a better roster then than they do now. Our average margin of victory against them last year was 21 pts per game.

So I’ll just agree to disagree. Math leaves little room for opinion. If I’m coaching, I’ll put up a bunch of two’s before I’ll put up a bunch of three’s. When you’re coaching I’ll respect your decision to do whatever you like. Assumption is a word. ASSumption is an opinion and a poorly developed one at that.
And the math is on my side. Which is why I make my decisions based on statistical data, not opinion. And I bet I've done a lot more coaching than you. Coaching were .001% means a savings of $2 million. What was your average in Stat 309? Mine was 98. What's funny is other coaches here and elsewhere don't agree with you.

And you don't know that more outside shooting opens things up inside causing both %'s to go up. Doing nothing but trying to score inside is doing exactly what the defense wants you to do.

The best attack is a balanced attack. You have to have production from the inside and outside. It creates the necessary spacing for offensive flow.

Of our players who can hit the three the issue is, as @Moooooo and I have both stated over the course of the season, limited abilities off the bounce. The only true triple threat we have is Booker. This allows the opponent's defenders to keep our other perimeter players covered tighter, as they don't have to be concerned with the possibility of getting beat with the dribble. Booker is a pretty good three-point shooter, but she's got so many other things to handle right now. Once she is able to play off the ball more, I'm predicting her three-point shot will become deadly.

As in the previous three seasons, Vic is coaching this group up and getting the absolute most out of them. Our weaknesses (perimeter quickness and toughness on the boards) aren't due to a lack of effort, but rather physical inabilities. We have two players who can address those weaknesses, and that would be Booker and Amo respectively.

Our kids play their guts out most of the time and that's all we can really ask for. Unfortunately, as with the OU game, we fall a little bit short of victory occasionally but there's not a "bad loss" on our record. I'd much rather have the season we're having then to be like Tennessee, where there's a load of talent and athleticism but the ineptitude of the coach is their glaring weakness.

He keeps saying you win with guard play but Gonzales and Shay never look for their shot they are just out there for defense. They are both very inconsistent.
Vic means defensive guard play, but most folks could come to that conclusion without having it spelled out in detail.

That I can certainly agree with. Teams that win the natty always have a balanced attack, except maybe swimming.

Funny thing about my understanding of the game... I predicted the overall outcome to within 5 points but erred on the side of Texas because… well I’m a Texas fan. I predicted OU would score 70. They scored 71. I predicted they would shoot a lot of threes, but only make a third of their threes. They took 30 and made 10. (I said 12/36 but pretty darn close). Basketball is simple. Take more shots and make more shots. But sometimes, the game gets in the way.

I respectfully agreed to disagree with you. I didn’t make it personal. I am laughing hysterically right now that you are bringing up college transcripts and that you know the grade you made in stat 309.

If you only knew :lmao:I can’t remember what I had for breakfast. But I do know this: only three of the top 25 three point teams are ranked in the top 25 power rankings. 15 of the teams with the best field goal percentage are ranked in the power top 25. If you can thread those two lines together, it doesn’t exactly equate to a balanced inside outside game being necessarily better than a damn good inside game. It doesn’t negate it, but it doesn’t support it either. Just too many other factors to consider - one of the biggest probably being turnovers.

In the Big 12, TCU takes more threes and makes more threes than anyone else.

South Carolina, the only undefeated team in the nation, doesn’t even crack the top 100 in threes taken or threes made this season. BUT when they do shoot them, they make them more often than almost anyone else. They are, however, #2 in field goal percentage and #1 in scoring margin. Texas is number three in scoring margin and 5 in FG%. The team that makes the most threes (Iowa) is 6th in scoring margin and 3 in FG%. And the irony of it all - OU is 69th and 94th.

The three isn’t bad by any means. The team with the 2nd best winning percentage has the 15th best three point made stat. But like I said earlier, the team with the highest winning percentage (South Carolina) is 112th in three points made.

As someone pointed out, we are 317 in three points made. Funny. We are #9 in winning percentage. :idk:

Best of luck to you Run Pincher, with your coaching and statistical analysis. You might think that is snarky. It’s not. I used the word assumption. You turned into ASSumption. I sincerely meant it when I said I would respect the decisions you make as a coach even if they differed from mine. Not sure why that set you off, but whatever…

I try not to make it personal on here unless someone attacks a player or the team… or that one troll who was disparaging women in general… or when they are from the northwest. Everything else is just my opinion which may or may not be better than anyone else’s. I was wrong about Aston until I was right.

I’d be thrilled if we hit 30 threes against BYU, but statistically speaking that’s about as likely as Schaefer becoming more like Fennely. Fennely loves the three. Schaefer doesn’t. And interestingly enough, they both win 66% of the time. But being math is kind of an exact thing - Schaefer wins .003 more times. Maybe if they coached together, they could win 132% of the time. :smokin:

Beat the hell out of BYU! Hook ‘em!

TLDR and don't give a *^&$. And I've finished in the top 3 of the season football prediction thread ever since it began.

For Statesman subscribers, in this article Vic talks (to the extent that he can) about the completely bullsh*t call that literally cost us a title. I notice Vic's presser where these comments were made has not been posted to the athletic dept. youtube page yet (is that by design or just oversight?). This still stings three days later. Danny Davis outed the ref in the article btw. His name is Roy Gulbeyan. If you look him up, he's officiated wnba games for around 25 yrs, which probably explains why the other officials were too chicken-sh*t to want to go talk to him about the call that he made which was clearly wrong.

Not surprisingly, Roy Gulbeyan has a terrible reputation with WNBA fans and players. Its not hard to find a history of people bi*ching about his calls all over social media.
Below are only three of many, many, many examples. If people know a ref by name, that's not a good sign.

OCYD. That's great. I don’t have opinions about football. Not really a follower of that sport. I hope you’re making a killing on one of those sports betting sites.

I’m not even sure tonight’s win is going to make me feel better. But sweeping the B12 tourney might!

That ref is a sack of sh*t... I did not realize that's who was officiating our game and made the call. I've seen him make all kinds of bad calls in the WNBA.

He’s always been bad at reffing. I recall seeing Vic taking real issue with calls this guy made in some of our games earlier this season. A real piece of work that one.

At least someone in the media finally has the balls to call these crooks out. I'd like to see someone have the balls to give him what he deserves.

Well he deserves to lose his job if you ask me. The minute I saw his name I remembered him from WNBA games. I don’t know a lot of ref names except for a couple really good ones and the worst ones and he definitely falls in the latter category. I had a “well no effing wonder” moment when his name popped up. Its still blows my mind he made that call from across the court. I could swear one of the refs near the action was giving a “bobbled ball” signal before he blew his whistle but frankly didn’t have the heart to go back and watch that play again.

If you ask me he deserves a good punch in the face. Is it not surprising he's from Tulsa.

Well hopefully he doesn't come too close to me, because I don't need to lose my job for getting thrown in jail. I'd love to knock TF out of him.

I’m not sure I can support violence but if I was standing behind either of you, I wouldn’t hold you back and I’d contribute to your defense fund.

For all the Gulbeyan haters (I've been a member of that club for years), I have bad news. I was watching an SEC game the other night and the POS was reffing (sp?) that game so it's not like leaving the Big12 is going to put him in our rearview mirror.

He's always been terrible. Makes a call and then exaggerates the foul signal which usually indicates a ref trying to either "sell it" and/or wants the spotlight. Both bad characteristics of an official.

@Born in ATX - Agreed. Dollars to doughnuts, he's one of those people who constantly brings up his lengthy experience and almost bullies other refs into deferring to him.

I spoke with a friend last night who is a former coach, former NCAA referee, and now runs a basketball instructional facility. This person has been associated with some of the historically best women's programs in the ACC. I asked them if they had seen the controversial traveling call, and of course they had (apparently it's getting some nationwide attention). This is someone who has no bias for or against Texas, and they said the call was absolute bullsh_t. Not only was it the wrong call coming from a referee who was on the opposite side of the floor, but apparently one of the points of emphasis in recent officials meetings was for officials to be "more concentrated on their own zones." This call totally goes against that point of emphasis.
