Well, now it's all right there for the taking. It'll be a tough, loud environment in that building full of tornado bait. We will need great focus and a total team effort for four quarters to pull this off. Business trip, let's get it!

Very excited for this game!!! I mean honestly, I just don’t know that when Rori went down this was a thought in my head. But here we are. Let’s get down to business!!!

I'm nervous about Wednesday. OU really piled it onto OSU.
I am as well. The one main issue we have is no small quick guards, their speed and quickness gave us fits. I think it's incumbent upon Vic to scheme this game in our favor. We need to not press, get back stay with the shooters and slow this sucker down. Don't want Tot carving us up again. What do we do esteemed hornfans coaches?

The overplaying defense got us in trouble last time with all their motion and weaving. Also, because we hit the offensive glass so hard it gives them a chance to get out in transition. We have to remain cognitive of the fact they don't necessarily attack the basket in transition like most teams do... they look for transition threes a lot of times.

In the half court when we hedge on those high ball screens it can get us in trouble against them, so we may want to switch some also. They also back door us a lot with their motion against our overly aggressive defense. I know I sound like a broken record, but I'm not sure I wouldn't throw in some TOUGH 3-2 match up and make that motion offense more difficult to deploy. If you think about it... last week Texas Tech basically used the OU game plan against us and damn near beat us with it. We have to make some adjustments.

Yep, we definitely need good energy from the gals and a well-coached game from Coach Vic. There's no time for surprises.

Thanks for that, really great to have an ex-coach's perspective. I worry with Vic that he won't adjust and keep running the same game plan no matter the circumstances. But tough to argue with 26 and 3......... but I will. :D

It's not that Vic doesn't teach excellent man-to-man defense... there's nobody better. It just takes a whole lot of athleticism and depth to hang defensively with all that motion OU runs. It's especially tough without a player like Rori who can apply that suffocating pressure at the top. OU thrives on attacking an overly aggressive defense, getting it out of position, and then kicking the ball to open shooters.

Keys to game imo: Taylor and Deyona stay out of foul trouble and Shaylee and Shay hit some threes. I believe we win this game by 5-7.

Definitely need our different combos of bigs to play well. It sure would be nice to see Amo have a huge "homecoming" game and lead us to victory.

LMAO at "tornado bait."

brink -- I wish you were coaching this game. IMO, you have summarized all the points necessary to beat OU (and similar teams). I hope our coaching staff is not stuck in their usual formula, thinking that just playing harder will do the job. If you are a broken record, it is a record I wish Vic was paying attention to.

A new meme..."Tornado Bait aggy."
Clarifying the term " tornado bait" is not speaking about the weather in Oklahoma, but rather the classless trailer trash mentality of the OU fan base that tends to fill up Lloyd Noble. Been there, witnessed it, it's some of the worst imaginable.

The question I have is what did:
Princeton
Tennnesse
UNLV
North Carolina
Southern
Kansas State (first time)
West Virginia

Do to win against OU?

Sorta rhetorical, but sorta a valid question for those who may have watched those games.

And, and....they rank 262/349 in defense.

Ok. Everyone made good points that I read with interest yesterday. Can’t remember em today. So here are the random keys to winning Wednesday. Don’t full court press. Jones and Gaston are poor hedging at the three point line….especially Gaston…..they can’t guard the sooner bigs there…..so hedge better…..or switch…..and no three pointers for their bigs. Guard the wings and baseline threes. I go by a Schaefer saying…..don’t think the bigs can score enough inside for Sooners to win…..so take away something and it’s the penetration and dishing for threes. Jones and Gaston have to de a decent job inside one-on-one to make it harder. Play solid on the perimeter in half court defense, make it tough on entry passes and play solid/decent D by our bigs inside. AND since our bigs are at a defensive disadvantage on defense, make Sooners pay by relentlessly going to Jones/Gaston inside on offense. Be efficient on offense (no quick threes that compromise our get-back defense. And no zone. They’re too good from BTA. I’m sure Schaefer reads this message board so now he has the blueprint for win Wednesday.

I found it hilarious on multiple levels. Good one!

I'm sure Vic will do exactly what you told him, the coaches always do what I tell them.

But seriously, I don't understand the No Zone comment. Wasn't the man defense last time what allowed them to set picks and back door cuts leaving their shooters wide open? And I think we all know they'll shoot lights out when left wide open.

OU is going to make threes. That’s a given. But if you live by the three, you die by the three. The way to beat them is to take away everything else. We played them within 4 last time scoring 87. They can’t stop our offense, but it will be hard to stop theirs. We simply have to slow them down.

I don’t think a zone wins this. Playing harder does. That might sound over-simplified but in the last game we let them shoot 49%. They average 43% If we hold them to that average, we win. I’m not convinced a zone contains them. They are simply too good from long range. But last time we let them score 46 in the paint. That’s why Vic was so pissed. West Virginia held them to half that while letting them make 13 threes. The paint is the key. Vic built his entire career beating teams like OU. Defense travels. Defense wins games.

Just a slight improvement on pressure defense will win this game. Rebound. Turn them over. Limit their points in the paint. Hold Williams, Verhulst and Vann to10 or below each or at least two of them. That’s the problem with OU. You can’t just limit one player. You have to stop 2.

Whatever we do, we can’t get behind in the second quarter like we did in Austin. If we are chasing them in the second half, I doubt we catch them.

Gaston and Moore having good games is key, but they need to be lazer focused on the help side. Force them back out. Make them take the three. Don’t get discouraged when they make that three. They will miss the next two.

On the offensive side, live in the paint, vacation in the paint, eat, sleep and sh*t in the paint. But OWN IT on both sides.

Any threes should be gravy. Get to the line often.

I wouldn't say that we need to play a zone and be totally dependent on it, but I do think throwing it in like we did at Baylor would be beneficial. Like you said they're going to hit threes.. but containing all that motion and movement is a huge key to victory. You can also get a hand in the face of three-point shooters with the matchup zone.

When they attack downhill against overly aggressive defense most often they are not looking for a shot at the rim, but rather They are looking to get the defense rotating while their perimeter shooters relocate for the kickouts, or either someone slipping to the basket in the opposite side of the lane. Helping the helper will be huge in our man to man defensive pressure. Mixing up defenses... even if it's just mixing up how we handle the ball screens... will make them have to think more.

We have also GOT to cover their perimeter shooters in their transition game. I heard it said best by some TV announcers, that when guarding a team that likes the transition 3 pt shot, your transition defense has to "fan out" on the break to keep the offensive players covered. Defending their transition game just might be THE most important thing.

Like was said: "Tornado Bait aggy".

I truly don’t think it will be the three that gets us. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make almost a dozen. I hope I’m wrong. In my very humble, been a long time since I coached, opinion - the key to beating OU is limiting their points in the paint. With our team this year, I honestly can’t tell you if we do that with a zone, a man-to-man or a combination of the two. I wouldn’t want to see us press until late in the game. Punch them in Q1. Hang with them in the second. Punch the snot out of them in Q3 and then gas them in 4.

That said, I like our chances because when we are focused, we are very hard to beat. We will be focused, I am convinced of that.

Another ex-coach's opinion, much appreciated!
Enormous game for both teams and I'm sure the crowd will be rabid.

Last season, we were in a similar position - desperately needing a road win in norman to stay in the race. The game was on a Saturday and sooners were offering all kinds of free junk to try to draw a crowd (they ended up with over 10,000 that day). We had a very thin roster (Sonya Morris was out) and oU was loaded with 6th yr talent. It seemed pretty hopeless. That morning, I found out my wife committed us that day to a winery tour in Fredericksburg with a bunch of friends. I was pissed, but figured I could still watch the game on my phone. Problem is, the tasting room was underground so I ended up having no signal at all. We finally emerged with 2 mins left in the 4th and to my surprise, my team was absolutely kicking sooner tail all over the place. So here's what I'm going to do on Wednesday: I will completely ignore the game until around 7:50 pm, and then only check the score on the espn app. You can all thank me later.

And the worst part is that Fredricksburg wine tour is worthless. 90% of the wineries there don't grow any grapes. For a real wine tour go to CA and do your own.
