Small School UT Recruiting History Trivia

no one remembers Ingraham but was All SWC and he blocked for Earl. Shearer was on the Johnny Carson show for winning the Outland trophy. The coach was Ken Dabbs, close friends of Rooster Andrews and through him DKR. Beck was the smartest yet meanest of them all. Sad that he got injured early..I thought he was just as good as Ingraham.

Kenneth Dabbs was hired by DKR after 4 years leading the Westlake athletic department and as its first head football coach. He was instrumental in recruiting the great Earl Campbell to the 40 acres. He continued working for UT athletics after Darrell retired and put in 20 years at UT. I think Kenneth was close friends with everyone he met. I had the pleasure of hearing a few of his stories. Hook'em!

Ken was one of the finest men to ever walk the sideline at Memorial Stadium. Deloss was once trying to get something done and meeting with mediocre success. When asked my opinion, I told him there were two people at The University that more people owed favors than all the others combined - Bob Rochs & Ken Dabbs.

My stepmother was best friends with BJ Andrews and of course Rooster was Ken’s closest friend. So my connection continued after football. They even looked alike..Rooster and Ken. I graduated with Bobby, Ken’s eldest. There should be a movie made about Ken.

My family also was close to Ken. My Dad coached in Freer in the 40's and 50's and Ken was one of his QB's. After Ken graduated an went to Sam Houston he and Margarite lived with my grandparents in Huntsville. Ken got his first coaching job in Bellville with my dad's recommendation. They were close all their lives. In fact Bob was named after my dad. I loved the guy and always thought of him as an older brother and I miss him.

I thought Ken was originally an East Texan for some reason. Looks like you have the early Ken Dabbs story. And I had no idea that he had played high school football because he was so small. As you know Bobby even married Betsy Andrews and they had a son, Will.

Do you have any information on why he left Sweeney and how he got to Westlake?

After Sweeney won the championship he was offered the head job at Arlington or Irving (wherever Alan Lowery played) and he reluctantly moved. After success there, he was asked to take the job at that new school in the hills outside Austin. He always loved Austin and couldn't pass up the opportunity to get back.

That explains why Alan practiced with the Westlake football team during two-a-days before the WHS second season. The school was so new that there wasn’t a locker room or a practice field. So we jumped in a bus and rode down Bee Caves Road and practiced in the field directly behind Barton Springs Pool. where everyone parks today to enter Barton Springs from the back entrance. I had just moved to Westlake from Lubbock and the first few days I had no idea that there was a giant spring-fed pool so close because of the fence and the slope down I couldn’t see it. that’s how few people used to swim there..even in the middle of the summer and there was no gate in the back..everyone entered from the front. We we’re allowed only one small Dixie cup of water per practice..to toughen us up I guess. One player almost died from heat stroke the first Westlake season two-a-days which were located at St. Stephens private school.

Glycomer,
Wanted to clarify one thing. Ken was not born in Freer, but in Ranger, Tx. His dad worked the oil fields and when the boom hit south Texas the family moved to Freer.
BTW, did you play for him at Westlake?

Yes..corner. 50 years ago this year. We were ranked in the top 10 before district but we played in one of the toughest 2A districts in 2A history. 4 of the teams were undefeated going into district play. The other 2 teams had one loss. Injuries cost us the district title. Back then only one team advanced to the playoffs. There was a three way tie for first and a three way tie for last place. So they flipped a coin and the Round Rock Dragons were the winner. They all three flipped a coin and with the winner being the coin side that was single. We ended up 7-3.

Lifelong Longhorn fan and lifelong Amarillo and panhandle resident! Always have followed recruiting. I guess the OP’s question got answered and I sure didn’t know that answer! Have always loved the small town Texas recruiting thing. We got a kid Brennan Thompson from tiny Spearman up here in the panhandle! Through the years DKR
and Fred Akers did a good job of small town recruiting. Remember lots of names but I’ll just Nam some small towns we have recruited from throughout the years! Sorry if it’s Panhandle, West Texas centered! Abernathy, Dumas, Canyon, Hereford, Perryton, Andrews, Ft. Stockton, Iran, Plainview, Missed out on the Golden Palomino! Contest continues….. it’s easy who was the “Golden Palomino” and whence did he hail?

Donnie Anderson was a poster boy for illegal recruiting. He actually lived in Port Neches, but his dad got a "great job" in the Panhandle, so they moved. There were either 3 or 4 Anderson brothers that bought houses on 7th street. Donnie actually spent a month there before reporting to Packers camp after he was drafted.

Fwiw I spent many an afternoon sunning and freezing, er, swimming at Barton springs in the mid 70s. On weekends it was packed after noon. Pretty empty on weekdays usually.

That was one peaceful place. Great place to decompress

Late to the thread but two things

Alan Lowry played at Irving (tigers).

Heck yes I remember Rick Ingraham. Helluva lineman. One thing I recall is the guy he lined up against in the 1-1-78 cotton bowl seemed 30 lbs bigger than him....he had his hands full that day

You mean Mule Frazier wasn't a guest starter for the sprints?

Between his announcement of "set" and firing the gun, you could have had chicken fried steak delivered from that place in Danbury
