The obvious question is who was pitching in all the losses??

My only gripe with Coach Pierce is that our pitching staff, overall, uses too many pitches. Even LBJ on Friday allowed only 1 run but was over 100 pitches thru 6 innings. I am a huge pitch count guy and that is the only thing Coach Pierce and I seem to disagree on WRT coaching. This has been going on for a while. It may well be his undoing that he would not give Woody Williams complete control like he wanted and so WW left. I don't know that is the deal but that is my reading of the situation. I thought WW was a home-run hire and I was very sad to see him leave.

So why so many pitches? We nibble a lot. 0-2 count, the batters have the bat on their shoulder because they know the next pitch is out of the zone. Boy those UW guys were surprised when Ace came in because he doesn't play that way. He struck out 3 batters on 3 pitches the first couple of innings before they caught on.

Anyway, it seems our pitches out of the zone are not fooling anyone. 2022 and 2023, this led to a LOT of walks, which is maddening. It's early yet, but this year it seems Pierce has directed the staff to cut down on the walks, so now we are serving it up and they are hitting it. Is that a part of the process? Is it worse? IDK, we will have to see as the year goes on. So long as we take care of the conference games and make the post-season, I can live with it.

Well, you guys are better educated and informed UT baseball critics than me. All I can comment on today was how consistent and dominating Ace was. Pierce needs to make him a starter. But dont overload his arm, especially at first.... 5 or 6 innings max.?

The current battle for the #2 and #3 starting pitcher spots looks like it's between:

- Ace Whitehead
- Grubbs
- Fontenot

Fontenot is the flame thrower in that bunch, clocking in at 95 mph +. He was the #1 high school pitcher in Louisiana. Pounds the zone til it hurts the catcher's hand.

Grubbs has his sinker/slider working this year, and is getting lots and lots of ground outs. He has improved the most since last year, and his control now seems fairly good. He can paint the corners with some movement. I thought he might still be a year away, but it appears his time may have arrived.

Ace Whitehead is old reliable. No blazing fastball or freakish breakers that defy the laws of physics here. Just reliable pitching, and placing the ball on the corners of the strikezone with enough movement to fool lots of batters. Good to very good control. Decent enough breaking stuff. He just gets the job done again-and-again. He's the least prone pitcher on the staff to give up the big innings.

Havnt watched a lot of Texas baseball this year just because its not very fun. I have never been a Pierce fan but he has gotten us to CWS so thats why he gets the big bucks. I dont see him ever having what it takes to win it all but we can hang around, this year not withstanding.

Hurley bounced back well in the 2nd mid-week game vs. AF. Some days he's got it, and some days he don't.

Max Grubbs
Sophomore
(as of 3/20/2024)

4 walks in 20.2 innings pitched :clap::clap::clap::clap:
2.61 ERA :yes:
1.21 WHIP :yes::yes:

Not too shabby at all. That very low number of walks for 20.2 innings is impressive and shows very good control. He's not just going out to the mound and throwing batting practice either with a WHIP of 1.21. Opponents aren't teeing off on him. Look for a lot more of this pitcher.

Looks like Ace Whitehead and Max Grubbs have stepped up to fill our #2 and #3 starting pitcher positions quite well.

Fontenot could be slotted as a weekday starter or a weekend middle reliever. He's been hit some, but he has good stuff.

There's no official stat for this (that I'm aware of), but check this out:

Combine our 3 weekend starters from above:

Only 3 Homeruns surrendered in 83 innings

These 3 weekend starters are not giving up very many homeruns. 83 innings divided by 9 innings per game = 9.222 games

9.222 games divided by 3 Homeruns = Only 1 Homerun surrendered every 3.07 games

That's right. Our 3 weekend starters are collectively only giving up 1 homerun every 3.07 games.

With the game evolving into a power bashing fest, we're going to win a lot of games with these 3 starting.

Meanwhile, we're hitting almost 2 homeruns per game. This bodes well.

Threw a no hitter on May 31, 2023 in the Regional Championship playoff game. It wasn’t a perfect game—he walked two batters over the course of the entire game. It’s his 2nd no hitter this season.

:fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire:

He’s probably the most ready-to-go from day one of any of the Freshmen. Has superior command/control. He’ll challenge guys like Whitehead, Hurley, Santos, and Morris for the Sunday and Mid-week starter spots.

7-0
0.22 ERA
Averaged over 2 strikeouts per inning

Sure, it’s Wisconsin, but that is utter and complete domination.
Selvig gets the start Tuesday 3/26 vs aTm Corpus.

Before you purchase CWS tickets, lets see if they can beat any descent teams. Baylor is abysmal this year but we may be as well. Heard commentator on one of the games this weekend with a player from 1998-2000 who said they were told they were the worst team in forever. They eventually turned it around and hoping Texas will as well.

Agreed legend. Baylor isn't a good team, i'm happy for Grubbs and Ace but Ace has never lasted very long against a good hitting team, like 2 innings max. We don't really play any one else the rest of the season so we may not find out till the playoffs. No one else was stepping up though either so what do you do?

Woody was key to a Ship. He had a great thing in being on the staff. There is indeed a reason he is no longer here, and I don’t think it’s cause he lost interest. He did not want to be in the dugout and not have control of the pitching staff. Wish he still here
But they are rolling so let’s ride!
