Old UT Photos

One of my first off campus stops during Summer Orientation in 1976 was Nothing Strikes Back ice cream parlor on Guadalupe. The place was a dive but the atmosphere was priceless. The interior was “illuminated” entirely with fluorescent black lighting. Closed on John Lennon’s birthday.
It was only around for a year or two after my arrival on campus but along with the Dessau Dance Hall, Taco Flats, and the Armadillo constitute my memories of Austin in the mid 70’s.

I lived in Austin my 7th grade year. (Go Lamar Jr Hi Scotties!!!)

We lived just off Red River by the Hancock golf course. Our TV was an old POS and I usually couldn't tune in the Cowboys games on Sunday, but the dudes at Hole in the Wall would let me come in and watch on their TVs. I saw Staubach complete the original Hail Mary to Drew Pearson against Minnesota at that bar.

Good times, good times.

I remember friends at UT telling me about this sub shop called Schlotzky's that they liked. During a visit in the early 70's several of us went there for lunch - I was HOOKED. Now they are in my top 3 fav sandwich joints. We ate at the original shop - think it was a little West of campus? ... can't remember where exactly now. New one is on the drag IIRC?

On a side note, Great Outdoors Sandwich Shop is also in my top 3...

Hit the nostalgia button there Worster. When my baby girl went off to college we would visit one of those whenever I could visit. I always got the bbq chicken pizza because that was her recommendation. Some bad experience caused her to transfer to Vanderbilt, and closer to us, for her last two years but we still bring that up whenever we pass one today. My oh my that was so long ago.

I think the original shop was on South Congress near Travis Heights, right? I remember going there and thought the sandwich was very different from anything else but I immediately loved it. I recall the shop being pretty small.

Ahhhhh, The Drag:

Amy's Ice Cream

The GM Steakhouse - where they insulted the customers (skip the steaks, order the burgers and shakes)

Hole in the Wall

The mural

Quackenbush's

At the South foot of the drag/just off it: the original Player's Sports Bar, and the all-u-can-eat pizza place.

This popped up for me. Some good stuff like

Night Hawk on the drag.... ate there many times.

Required stop at the Co-Op always required when I visited!

I thought the first Schlotzky's was on South Congress, but I am certainly willing to be educated if I am wrong. In 1975, that's the one the old man would take me to anyway.

EDIT: I'm late to the party, but my memory of Schlotzsky's first location was solid.

That was the best place to watch out of town Longhorn games back in the day. People really got into it, the beer was cold and cheap, and the grub was pretty good for bar/pub type food.

Ran into my homie Kevin Durant there circa summer 2012. Poor dude was nearly sideways to fit inside with their low ceiling.

I went there Sunday nights. Awesome fries, fried mushrooms, and chocolate shakes. Of course good burgers.
