Well we had one and he brought a problem with him that cost him his "dream job" in his words. CDC is a excellent AD so he can and will right the ship. Yes this was a DEI hire just like strong but we will get out of it. Sucks to see Barnes field one good team after another and wish he was still here.
Why do we have to go that low? CDC didn’t with Beard. He poached a Big12 coach.
It’s about putting a TEAM together. The head coach ultimately determines the players and type of players he wants (with input from assistants but he is the final say) and the assistants recruit those players. Beard put last year’s team together and it was mentally and physically tough. Terry put this year’s players together and it is clearly not in the same area code as last year. The only player doing anything is a Beard portal player, Disu. Hunter and Mitchell have not improved and in some respects have regressed. Terry will probably get two more years, but he is going to have to get several top quality players in the portal which he didn’t do last year coming off an elite 8, so the hill is going to be much steeper this year. Just on numbers, Abmas and Cunningham, Horton, Disu, and Shedrick are all gone. I expect Hunter and Mitchell to go pro or transfer. The two high rated recruits are probably anywhere from 70-30 to 50-50 on actually enrolling. Even if they do enroll, Terry is going to need at least three high impact transfers. I don’t think this is the model and should not be the model for sustained success (being in the mix for conference championship and regular participant in sweet 16).
Kansas, Baylor, Iowa State, TCU and Tech (Sampson has too much baggage but Houston would match anyway) will match anything CdC offers so those six are out. Maybe the UCF or BYU coaches? Bottomline - you have to find someone better that you are willing to pay.
As soon as Terry is let go, the players will all miss him and won’t play for anyone else. Boycott!!
Needless to say I have never been a RT fan and its just based on his record on his own, a .500 record. This team is nowhere near the same defensive team that Beard demanded. What some of the people here with orange covered glasses miss is that not everyone is meant to be chief. Some are meant to be in a support role and RT is one of those in my opinion. I dont believe he gets 2 more years. This is not a melt down this year but it certainly could be next year and that will drive a nail in his coffin. RT has been an assistant to several very successful coaches and he either didnt learn or took the same opinion as last year when he said "we built" this team. He was on the team but no one came here because of him.
Yes.^^^ And there are many successful coaches in other conferences that might be interested in the head job at UT. CDC will do his homework and bring in someone who will be successful in the SEC
Not so sure his hands were tied. It was pretty evident that it was a very balanced, multi-faceted, deep, senior-led team last season. And without those guys the team was hollow. It’s always about the players, and if Terry could recruit those types of guys, then he wouldn’t need to be a good coach. I’m sort of disappointed that CdC didn’t see the writing on the wall.
It wasn’t evident to you that the run was a result of Allen, Carr, Rice, and Disu? With hindsight it’s obvious, but even in the moment it was clear. Any one of Beard’s assistants could have guided the team to the exact same place.

As exciting and meaningful as recruiting is, this is exactly why I never follow it. You never know who you’ve got until they sign on the last day of recruiting. And even then sometimes they don’t show up or leave before doing anything.
Well, of course players are absolutely important. But remember Shaka had some extremely talented guys but never won a single NCAA tournament game. I have to give Terry significant credit for getting the team to the Elite 8. This doesn’t mean I am not giving kudos to the players.
