Pitching preview:

Based on their 3 game weekend series vs. Missouri, they're pretty decent. They split 1-2 for the series with Missouri : 3-2 W; 1-3 L; 8-12 L. Note, games 1 and 2 had Missou only scoring 2 and 3 points, which indicates some good starting pitching from Cal Poly SLO's top 2 starters.

Game 1 starter: Jakob Wright

Game 2 starter: Steven Brooks (went 7 full innings)

Game 3 starter: Logan Lunceford (got shelled in 3.2 innings on the mound)--we might see a different Sunday starter.

Frequently used Relievers: Tanner Sagouspe, Jacob Torres, Caden Pearlman, Griffin Naess, Josh Volmerding

#23 LHP in California during recruiting

A decent heat thrower.
Fastball in the mid-90s.
Plus breaking ball.
Strikeout pitcher.
Spotty Control at times: Gives up more walks than he should.

#8 MLB draft prospect in the Big West conference.

Struck out 5 Missouri batters in 6.2 innings using 99 pitches.
Throws a lot of balls.
Get his pitch count up.
Draw lots of walks. Don't swing at junk out of the zone.

This guy is a pretty good pitcher, so we'll get a good look at how we are at the plate. Due to his history of spotty control, look for us to take a lot of pitches.

Cal Poly SLO's top 2 starting pitchers are NOT chopped liver.

This is a pretty decent team. Probably a tad better than KU, better than UH, better than Baylor, not as good as KSU.

Cal Poly SLO:

1st two starting pitchers -- fairly good to good

Batting lineup -- pretty pedestrian

This should be a good series to see how good we really are at the plate. I'm pretty confident our pitchers can keep Poly's scoring low, so our real challenge is at the plate.

Tanner Sagouspe

RHP
6'0"
200 lbs

Sagouspe is one of Poly's most frequently used relievers, so we should see him Friday or Saturday. Coming out of high school, he was recruited as much as an outfielder as a pitcher. Can also play catcher.

2023: pitched in 14.1 innings with 16 strike outs. He gets plenty of strikeouts, but he surrenders plenty of walks, and is frequently hit. So it's often feast (strikeout) or famine (walk, hits) with Sagouspe.

His fastball is in the 80s, so he's definitely not a flamethrower. He relies a lot on his breaking stuff, which he throws frequently, making him a fairly effective pitcher most outings.

Something to watch for and be wary of: Apparently, Sagouspe has a good pick-off move to 1st base. He picked off a Missouri Tiger baserunner who was a bit too far off the bag.

I think Powell has a hurt foot or something, so Borba may spell him as needed.

I really like our young #s 7, 8, and 9. This could be an exceptional tail end of the batting lineup.

My bigger concern is #5 and #6. Jack kicks it into high gear around late April, but it would be nice to see some good hitting in these early-season games in the middle of the lineup. Galvan has immense power at bat. He's gotta work that avg up over the Mendoza line (at least).

I remember not liking Pierces lineup until the very end of the season last year. To me, he handicaps his offense during the season until it's do or die.

I do like seeing J Dup in the lineup, he's a baller at the plate. i would like to see him and Cummings get more of the DH at bats. Spot on with Galvan, he just needs to battle better when he's got two strikes on him and at least put the ball in play instead of being an out, he knows this, just need to execute it (don't miss the pitch you like!).

I like that Coach pulled the trigger on Witt, he needs to work from the pen and I'm pretty sure i mentioned that last year, then give him what he can handle from there, increase his load as he gains steam.

I need to see better outings from our starting pitchers, the schedule gets infinitely tougher starting next weekend with LSU, Texas St., and Vanderbilt then Texas Tech the following weekend.

Also, this is the weekend that guys make the batting line up for the tough stretches in my opinion. We are going to need to improve the offense to get through the next 7 games after this weekend. I don't see how Cummings is left out if he can hit, and Belyeu will still get some opportunities but i would be surprised if he starts any next weekend unless coach puts him in against Tex St.? but those guys are no joke either.

Hurley had a rough outing last time; he had a bad 1st inning and then mostly got it together. Still, I'd expect better.

Even on an off night, LBJ was pitching around a 3.00 ERA level.

We know that Witt is changing roles.

I think Howard is a pitcher who can keep it at a sub 4.00 ERA level over the course of the year. He's getting his chance to cement himself in the starting lineup.

Paso Robles, CA
That's California cattle country. Big rodeo.

It's the Texas of California, though they would NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER describe themselves that way...

Now this is a big ol boy at bat. He’s eaten a whole bunch of those California smoked tri-tips.

O’ Dowd fields it. 3 outs. No runs.

Wright on the mound for Poly. He throws in the mid 90s. See scouting report summaries above.
