BATTING - Good Coaching leads to 109 Homeruns and the Big 12 POY

Belyeu

0.333 batting avg
0.400 on base %
4 homeruns

It will be a battle for the OF starting spots next season, but Belyeu has an inside track. Pencil him in, along with Brown.

Gasparino, Cummings, Service, and others could also make a splash. I'm thinking Thomas stays at 1st base.

Santa Barbara has been good to him.

Belyeu is putting it together at the plate now in college. It took him a few laps to get it in gear, but he's close to hitting on all cylinders now.

2/27

This is fun.

We now have 13 homeruns in 8 games for 1.625 homeruns per game.

66 games x 1.625 HR/game = 107 projected homeruns on the year.

The home run total I previously posted was for the regular season only, I didn't calculate for a post season but I do expect we will play a few more games beyond the regular season.

After 8 games:

Thomas .581 <------Freaking amazing.
Galvan .500 <-----fantastic surprise.
Schuessler .500
Powel .441
Gasparino .360 <------more productive at this point than i expected.
Flores .344
Borba .273
Kennedy .250
Belyeu .250
Brown .167 <------Less productive than i expected at this point.
J Duplantier .167
O'Dowd .115 <------ditto as Brown.
Sanders .100

Of note: P. Brown on base % is at least .324 so he is at least taking walks every now and then but O'Dowd is completely off the rails right now in every category.

Flores and Powell tied with 4 home runs for the yr so far.

Keys offensively for me to win these games are can Belyeu, Flores and Galvan maintain their productivity comparatively as the competition improves? I picked these three because they have only recently shown against lesser competition that they can in fact contribute offensively and I want to see some level of consistency against the next four opponents.
And either someone needs to spell O'Dowd or he needs to come out of his slump this weekend.

and my personal lineup would look like this:

Thomas - duh
Powell - duhx2
Schuessler - DH
Flores
Galvan - C
Gasparino
Belyeu
Kennedy
Brown

But I don't see Pierce dropping Brown to the 8-9 hole, i wouldn't have a problem with any of those bottom three being in any order at the bottom.

I never thought we'd have a Catcher as the DH, but at this point it makes some sense. Both Schuessler and Galvan have started the year on a tear at the plate.

I thought one or the other would be a DH and the other would catch but it looks like coach is willing to rotate them at C. I haven't looked at the stats but my gut tells me Galvan should be catcher #1. neither are bad back there, if they would stay off their knees they would be more mobile and capable of handle poor pitches, you can't snag an errant pitch when one knee is on the ground nor do i believe your POP better when on a knee but what do i know, i'm not a college or pro coach.

I had several possibilities at the DH spot before the season from Cummings, Schuessler, Gasparino to even O'Dowd based on who won the starting fielding spots. O'Dowd is mucking things up though with his struggles right now and the defense is slightly better with Kennedy at 2nd.

I would like to see Werchen get a sac bunt attempt with two runners on and no outs if a struggling batter comes to the plate this weekend, i think he could be useful in that spot.

Both Galvan and Schuesller are really batting well as discussed above. However, both are just so-so defensive catchers thus far IMHO.

Maybe for some midweek games, Coach tries Oliver Service in there. He's supposed to have a gun for an arm, and very good athleticism.

I think because both need further development it's hard to get Oliver in. Until those two are to at a level Pierce is comfortable with Oliver is going to have to wait or at least that's my thinking.

We may blow a lot of big leads this year, but we'll make some big comebacks as well with this batting lineup.

Schuessler is this year's Murph or Powell. You know, the guy who's been hanging around the depth chart for years and then bursts onto the scene in a break through season, absolutely killing it at the plate, batting around 0.350 or so (0.400 or so for now, at least).

Good on Shoos for his diligent work and perseverance.

Here, now that's much better:
Shoos on the Loose!

Thomas has really been struggling lately (for him), thought maybe he was out of his slump but he went 0 for 4 with 3 strike outs today. His average has dropped to 3rd on the team now.
Too many strike outs today, 10 total, Borba went 0 for 4 with 2 SO's and Belyeu went 0 for 3 with 2 SO's. The bad thing about an offensive team is they can go cold so quickly. Very unproductive day today from the offense, not just the pitchers fault in this loss.
It's ok for a player, even two to struggle but we've got many of them, the only consistent hitters so far has been Powell and Schuessler.

Schuessler is now the second best hitter by average on the team and yet he wasn't starting in the lineup today, only PH for Belyeu once. (he did strike out though)

Shoos has been a huge boost to this team this year. Without his bat, we might have a losing record at this point.

Max Belyeu
(as of 3/20/2024)
7 Homeruns - tied for the team lead
0.283 Batting avg
0.427 On base % --
he has a good eye and draws a lot of walks
1.177 OPS - team leader (the #1 moneyball stat, even more important than on base %)
so, by many of the Moneyball gurus, Belyeu would be considered the best batter on the team as of 3/20/2024

Below is the list of the top 15 all-time greatest players by OPS--the greatest 15 offensive players ever.

So, at the college level, Max Belyeu is currently playing even better than Babe Ruth. At this level, he's playing better than the greatest MLB players of all time.

Babe Ruth................1.1598
Ted Williams............1.1155
Lou Gehrig...............1.0763
Barry Bonds.............1.0512
Jimmie Foxx.............1.034
Hank Greenberg.......1.013
Rogers Hornsby........1.0057
Manny Ramirex.........0.996
Mike Trout................0.9897
Mark McGwire..........0.9823
Micky Mantle.............0.9773
Stan Musial...............0.9757
Joe DiMaggio............0.9745
Frank Thomas...........0.974
Larry Walker.............0.9654

Stats for baseball fans: the single metric for offense is OPS.

After 21 games - 3/22/24 - we have 38 homeruns, for a 1.8095 homeruns per game.

Probable 66 games (including post-season tournaments),

so we're on track for 119 homeruns on the year!!!

After crapping all over the batters box at the plate last night, our team batting average has sunk below 0.300 to 0.299.

Our power hitting stats still look very good, and the OPS is also very good. Some nights we show up cold, but this is by-and-large a good hitting team.

Now if Whitehead and Grubbs can come through as the #2 and #3 starters, we could be in business to stay.

Max Belyeu.

He'll probably be the Big 12 player of the week again after that 3 homerun day (including one Grand Slam).
