2024 Texas Rangers

I keep looking for Leiter and Rocker to make an appearance at least in the bullpen, thought those guys would/should be ready soon and with the losses feel like this might be a good year to see what they have.

I hope that I am wrong, but I am not sure either will ever contribute. Leiter basically had to go to the instructional league to learn how to pitch. Rocker has had health issues since his college days.

Each may contribute in the future (or maybe not), but 2024 is not the right time. Both men need continued development in the minors. The Rangers have other short-term alternatives for the pitching staff.
P.S. I noted that this is a milestone post for me - my post number 8,000. I feel obligated to Hornfans to post something profound to mark the occasion. So, here's my profound statement -
"It's 4:15, and ou still sucks!" :ousucks:

Hate to hear that. I didn't get to watch them in college nor in the minors, was just being hopeful.

They have to limp through until the All Star break when their 3 best pitchers should be coming off the injury list.

Eovaldi, Gray, and Heaney are a pretty good top three and if Dunning and Bradford can be stable then the Rangers, who have a really stout lineup that most days should provide strong run support, can stay competitive until the reinforcements arrive for the rotation in July. Last year they had such a strong start offensively that all the questions around their starters and all the injuries to the starters could be overcome. The Rangers need their lineup to continue to be the machine it was last year and that will make the rotation that much more capable because they won't be asked to stand on their heads night after night. I keep seeing articles locally about Hader as a closer being a real possibility and the fact that Montgomery is still out there tells me he and the Rangers are trying. Add either of those two and the Rangers improve pitching at either the starting rotation or bullpen side dramatically. 2023 is just about over and we can truly start to count down the days to pitchers and catchers reporting.:texasflag:

FWHORN, your observation is a good one. Given a choice, I think I'd prefer signing Montgomery - he certainly came through when the chips were down this past season.

I was reminded today that Scott Boras is Montgomery's agent. This could go down to Opening Day.

Saw article today on Snell and Montgomery as two best starters still available and it noted that Boras is planning to max out Montgomery and that doesn’t bode well for a missing Ballys money Ranger team. Yankees are apparently willing to back up the brinks truck but the wild card is Montgomery really liked Texas and would prefer to stay if the $ can be worked out.

And BTW - haven't seen any news about Jake Odorizzi at all. Rangers let him go Free Agency (no surprise), but I haven't seen anything about potential offers. If the Rangers think he can come back from his shoulder injury and be effective, maybe they could sign him to a minor-league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. And Spring Training starts in 45 days.

Two weeks ago prime tv and the Rangers came to an agreement. Not certain of the terms or details

I was in dfw 2 weeks ago, it was an all afternoon discussion on The Fan. What's not certain is if they'd continue on the ballys platform/ channels or go over to Prime

H2R, thanks. I do not know how I missed that report. Such a move would probably call for an additional above prime (unlike THF), but Amazon would at least be reasonable for its prime customers.

^This is a high-risk, low-cost move. If he makes it to the Bigs, nice - if he doesn't, it didn't cost much to try.
I still think the Rangers are looking hard at signing Montgomery - and it could go right up to a couple of days before Spring training.

Any TV deal needs to get done sooner rather than later as the clock is ticking. The possible $90 million payment by Diamond mentioned in both of FW's articles is still a cut of $21 million from what is due, but Davis & Co made plenty in 2023 so they should be clear to the court that they are agreeable.

Interesting article about potential trade candidates for Rangers - Texas Rangers Top 5 Tradeable Players Include Prospects Jack Leiter, Justin Foscue - Sports Illustrated Texas Rangers News, Analysis and More. IMO, Rangers are still in a position to sign Jordan Montgomery as a Free Agent. But if they want additional rotation help (or Hader for the bullpen), maybe a trade is the right approach. With Semien, Seager, Lowe, and Jung in the infield for the foreseeable future, any minor league infielder who is within a year of being major-league-ready is blocked with the Rangers and could thus be a valuable asset for a trade.

Rangers have their Sunday and certain other afternoon games catcher:

Rangers sign Knizner, per report

Also signed all of their arbitration-eligible players except Adolis and they are still negotiating with him:

Rangers sign 7 of 8 arb-eligibles

Still no definitive news on Montgomery or Hader but the Yankees just signed Stroman so they may know something we don't about how things are going with the Rangers and Montgomery.

Knizner seems to be a good deal at $1.8M, but he pushes Huff back to #3 so the question becomes will Huff every make it to the top?

Per the reports I've read, Montgomery apparently wants to stay with the Rangers. It's worth noting that the Yankees, who were rumored to be the other team pursuing Montgomery, have moved on. With a pending settlement on TV money, perhaps the Rangers are in serious discussions with Boras for Montgomery.
Another question - if Montgomery can't be signed, do the Rangers take a serious look at Hader?

The only thing wrong with this article on the Adolis arbitration case is that it wasn't signed by the entire Ranger fan base, this encapsulates every thought I have had since I learned the Rangers only put up 5M as their arbitration number.
