2023 Fall Ball Softball

Thoughts from the UTSA game:
1. Wow, that Kavan is eye opening!
2. Wait, Simpson was eye opening in her Fall Ball debut. Like Kavan, she just got up on the mound, strike-strike-strike, three up and three down. Only later, did she struggle in the real season
3. Some of our veteran players are getting over recruited. It is only Fall Ball, but if some of these freshman can consistently hit the ball they way they've been hitting, some first basemen or outfielders or backup catchers will have new players in their place.
4. There might be some December transfers out

Mmmmm, not sure it would be nice or fair of me to throw out names. But the best example would be of a former player, JJ Smith. Decent player, but streaky as a hitter. So far, I've seen good contact on the ball and I believe (?) there was only one strikeout last night? As the older players were getting their time at the plate later into game, I was thinking "Hmmm, you may have been over recruited"
 
It’s pretty clear now why Coach White didn’t ask any of the 5th year seniors to come back. All of them landed in good places. He knew what he had coming in! You know that Mississippi was elated to get Courtney Day in the Portal!

One exception: Bella Dayton.

Everyone has a few lulls in their hitting, but hers are fewer and shorter (probably due to her ability to bunt). But she's a fast runner and a great fielder. A comparative example would be Popelka. But Dayton more consistent hitter than Popelka, now at Washington.
 
Ya this freshman class is showing out. I think Kayden Henry works her way in to the top 3 in the line up by end of spring. Girl can just flat out hit. Not a big fan of one-dimensional slappers like Maloney was last year, so happy to see her swinging away in the fall. A high average is nice and all but if you can't drive in runs or get extra base hits you are better off having a lower average higher home run extra base hit probability hitter.
 
Really impressed with Stewart! Her frame as a freshman is just wild to me. She’s going to be a great cleanup hitter and the same goes for Brown. This team looks better than where we were last fall at this point and we still haven’t seen Scott.
