2023/2024 Season - RT Era Begins

I haven't watch a basketball game all year. I used to never miss a game on TV. RT is doing about what I expected.
I was going to turn the TV off if Texas got down more than 10 in the 2nd half, but it was definitely worth the watch. If Texas had fought like that against ucf it woulda been a W.

What scares me is Terry will become a do less with more and lose games to inferior talent, but occasionally pull the big upset, just like Shaka.

Texas was predicted to finish anywhere from 3-6 in preseason by coaches and prognosticators. Looks like they will struggle to get to six wins in conference and finish 12 or 13 and likely on the outside looking in at the tournament. Terry certainly has this team underachieving. Sure hope the recruiting holds together.

The 2023-24 season has shown that predictions are more difficult than before for everyone, considering the transfer landscape and whether coaching matters less than ever before.

We've had a bunch of close games that didn't pan out, but I think the main reasons that we haven't lived up to the prognostications are:
1. Health of Disu and Shedrick - neither has been 100% all season and we can't beat teams with forwards when they're slogging around.
2. Brock's diminished role - went from .476 FG and .413 3P to .369 FG and .327 3P overnight. I'm not sure if it's a confidence thing or opponents just have a better idea what to expect when he's out there.
3. Every college in the country whiffed on portal guards, so maybe (just maybe) we need to recruit some.

Abmas is who we thought he was. Hunter is basically the same as last season (but I wanted him more like his ISU self). I've actually been pleasantly surprised with Mitchell's play after how he was kind of a no-show last season. We have virtually no one filling the shoes of Carr or Allen, and considering those are big shoes, it's no surprise we've had a big dropoff.

It’s always interesting to revisit things pessimistic posts like this one.

We are already at 8 conference wins with an above-average chance to get to 9 (and 10 remains possible). After tonight, we will be tied with the loser of the BYU-TCU game for 7th in the conference. While these aren’t great results, they are far from a falling-sky scenario.

I stand by that post at the time it was made looking at the effort to that point and the remaining schedule. Pessimistic or realistic. They got by bailor at home and tceh on the road which were both unexpected.

I think the results are on par with the roster we have. Keeping last year's commits would have done wonders to make us even better.

A big concern for starting out in the SEC is returning a lineup of Onyema, Pryor, Anamekwe, and Johnson. We've got to keep all of our current recruits AND hit the portal for like 5 more.

Terry is probably happy for the 0-3 weekend by the baseball team. All the pessimists and vultures have shifted their focus to David Pierce.

We need Weaver's better offensive performance not to be a fluke. We need a scorer beyond just Disu and Abmas.

Weaver is a freak athlete but I dont see him as a legit threat. No one fears his shooting, he can just jump out of the gym with slams. Very erratic play but he is a hustler similar to Cunningham. He affects the game with hustle & defense.

We’ve all whiffed on predictions. No big deal. My prediction now is that this Horn team will continue to be unpredictable.
Having said that, I predict the Horns will go 1-1 the last two games to finish conference at 9-9.

Yes, I agree about Weaver's athleticism. He is a bit of a wild card offensively. His energy and hustle are outstanding.
My major concern is when he is handling the ball. He gets out of control and loses possession when he dribbles too much; and he heads into heavy traffic and loses the ball too much. But he is trying to make something happen and I do like that very much. He's only a sophomore--he'll get a lot better next year and his senior year. He is not going to be a pro, but he could be an outstanding senior leader if he stays. I hope he stays and graduates a longhorn.

Simply put - Weaver is a great athlete and not really a basketball player.

I've been wrong about this team all along. RT says they are one of the best teams in the country. At least I know he is not a pessimist like me. :e-thinking:

I think he is a great athlete and a good college basketball player.
As I mentioned above he is Only a sophomore, and will get better every year. Who knows, by the time he graduates he may be all conference.

At least The kid deserves respect. He’s earned it.

cary,
Some people just don't know how to be polite when assessing a player. They treat them as if they weren't even fully human, but just robots out there for our pleasure only, and worthy of whatever scathing (and usually wrong) criticism they can imagine.

You, on the other hand, get it, and I appreciate that.

Being polite like not being truthful? The announcer in the game today, if you were watching, even commented that he’s an energy guy and sometimes goes too fast. So manners aside, the guy is a great athlete and not quite polished enough to be considered a good basketball player. Sorry that you disagree or can’t bring yourself to say that.

365, The announcers also praised Weaver for his performance. They noted that he had been a valuable substitute and a consistent (double digits) scorer in recent games. I think he is a good player. The coach seems to think so too, as Weaver gets plenty of playing time and makes an impact.

If my post(s) differ from your view or any other hornfans', so what. I state my opinions honestly. Period. My posts speak for themselves. Besides, disagreements are common on all threads.

I would hope you would think twice before suggesting a fellow hornfan is not being truthful. Anyway, nothing is gained by casting incendiary aspersions like that toward a fellow hornfan.

I'm less worried about aspersions cast my way than about aspersions cast towards the UT athletes.

Saw where the NBA is ending G league Ignite this year because of NIL. A year late for Texas as Holland probably(maybe) would have honored his committment. Really could have used his abilities this year.

Just wondering how the Terry era would have begun if Holland (drafted 5th) and AJ Johnson (drafted 15) would have come here for a year instead of playing minor league pro ball.

Went through a lot of the Ignite clips from the draft, and I don't think Holland would have done a bunch to help us beyond the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament. He had a really poor shot selection against arguably worse defenses than he would have seen in the XII. I know that's sour grapes, as he definitely had a motor that no one else on our team had. Maybe our overall record would have been a hair better. But we would have hit someone in the postseason that would end it, much like Tennessee.
