2020 recruiting - Softball

She is currently playing Michigan State. Enrolled early.
Correction, playing now but flying around the country to play where there's no snow!
First home game in East Lansing is 3/25!

Graduated early to enroll early? A rarity, but props for that effort.

Just some fun information that I just found out.... Jayda coleman who is the #1 ranked player in the nation in the 2020 class and an Oklahoma commit is the girlfriend of Texas football commit Billy Bowman Jr. Would have been nice for him to convince her to bring her talents to Texas.

Ryleigh White:

Talking Texas with 2020 Softball Commit Ryleigh White

“I de-committed from the University of Tennessee and committed to Texas for the huge opportunity to play for and learn from Coach Mike White,” White said. “I am so excited to play with the best. It doesn’t get any better than Coach Spencer, Coach Singleton, and Coach White.”

Ryleigh White is a 6’1” right-handed pitcher and she has been a machine for the Blue Eagles at Immaculate Heart Academy. She hit over .400 in each of her first three seasons, for a total of 93 RBI’s in just 100 hits with 29 home runs. Those numbers are all outstanding, but she’s known mainly as an ace on the mound.

In her high school career, she has an earned run average under 1. During her junior season, she went an incredible 20-2 with an ERA of 0.67 and 277 strikeouts. She allowed just 40 hits in 136 innings pitched.

Adding another member to the 2020 recruiting class. I wonder if there will be enough playing time to keep every one happy? Plays SS. Brings some great numbers at the plate but not against D-1pitching.

I wish I knew how the softball "machinery" works. As a pure fan, I wonder:
1) How does Mike White and his staff know what type of player she is?
2) Did they pore over 4 years of tape of her at TLU? (doubtful)
3) Is she a pure practice player?
4) Did she contact the coaches and say, "I'll pay my own way. I'll even shag balls. I just want to experience this level of softball"?

Not to besmirch her play, but out of the blue players like this, makes we wish I knew what went into this transaction.

Based on the article that was provided she is very fast and went 31-31 in stolen bases so it seems like she will be more of a tuesday dermargosian type player who is mainly used for a base runner. I don't expect her to get any significant playing time at short stop but she is very fast so it was a good move.

If she is good defensively I could see her getting some time at short. With Miranda Elish pitching you could DP for her and let Miranda hit for herself.

Based on the recruits I'm seeing us get I can tell we have a type. We go after true athletes, also most seems to have a different kind of competitive spirit that lacked from previous teams.

Every time we play Texas State, Hannah Earls comes up to bat and I think, "Hannah Earls? That name is very familiar.....was she committed to us at one time?"

When Mike White arrived in 2018, he had to quickly evaluate Connie's recruits who were going to sign in a few months. One of the player's dad told me that they essentially show him in tournaments he could attend if they should still be considered a signable recruit. Essentially on-the-fly tryouts.

So, the 2020 class was also part of Connie's commitment class but you can see Mike taking his time and rebuilding it almost from scratch.

When Mike arrived, the list was:
Camryn Wincher SS
Crystal Davila 3B/SS
Hailey Hudson P
Hannah Earls OF/2B
Jayden Smith 1B/3B/C/SS

And by the time he got close to November 2019, the list had morphed into:
Jayden (JJ) Smith 1B/3B/C/SS
Bailey Williams SS/OF
Kyleigh Sand IF/OF
Ryleigh White, RHP
Alyssa, Washington, SS/C
Carlee Ratcliff, 3B/IF
Jordyn Whitaker, 3B/P
Cassie Roche, SS

Now going back, let's see what happened to all of these together (unless it states otherwise, they are still on the team they signed with)

Camryn Wincher - decommited upon White's hiring, enrolled early at Michigan State.
Crystal Davila - probably dropped by Mike. Signed with Houston. Never made it onto the 2020 Houston roster.
Hailey Hudson - probably dropped by Mike. Signed with Houston. Pitched no-hitter in 2021 and pitched and beat OK-State. Not showing up in Houston's 2022 roster
Hannah Earls - probably dropped by Mike. Signed with Texas State. Starter.
Jayden (JJ) Smith - The only "Connie recruit" that made the team. Late season starter.
Bailey Williams - Signed and plays sparingly when the game is out of hand.
Kyleigh Sand - Never was an official recruit/commit to Mike. All based on social media and rumor. Signed with Louisiana.
Ryleigh White - Mike flip from Tennessee. Plays in relief.
Alyssa, Washington - Seemed to start the season at SS, beating out Parker. Then lost the job to Parker and sometimes starts at 3B
Carlee Ratcliff - Plays mostly as pinch runner. Out of a few weeks due to collision in practice. Back base running
Jordyn Whitaker - Seems to be a favorite of Mike and the hitting coach (in practices). Started off as DP and/or OF. Came up big in Regionals
Cassie Roche - Last minute pickup and signing from Texas Lutheran as grad transfer, but tore her ACL and left the team
Brianna Cantu - transfer from Tech. Started a few games at 3rd. Demoted and hasn't played much since
Molly Jacobson - grad transfer from Ole Miss. #2 pitcher behind O'Leary. Won us Regionals

Looks like Mike picked up those that could contribute early or often in the 2021 season. And he's bringing even higher rated players to push these players. Some, I'm not sure will be here in 2 years.

Great Post Racer. It's funny because every time we played Texas State I was reminded that Hannah Earls was a previous Longhorn commit of Connie Clark's.
Little bit of Trivia: J. J. Smith was the last recruit (that made the team) that committed to Connie Clark. She committed as a Freshman and was one player she got right!

As it turns out, the biggest verbal commitment loss which Connie secured but White could not hold on to was 2019 Missouri pitcher, Alana Vawter. I believe Stanford came into the picture late in the recruiting process; she decommitted from Texas, took her official visits, but ultimately signed with Stanford. Considering she made the All Pac 12 First Team this season, I'd wage she'd be the ace of our pitching staff had she come to Texas; and, she appears to be a good hitting threat to boot.

Apparently, Hailey Hudson is in the transfer portal.
