2019 Recruiting - Football

It appears that the entire incoming 2019 class has qualified.

The only two not on campus already are S Chris Adimora (who graduates Thursday) and RB Derrian Brown (who is still recovering from a stroke). We hope Brown can enroll for the second summer session and continue his treatment in Austin.

A JUCO TE from Butler CC (Kansas) -- will be in Austin this weekend
“It’s just a unofficial I’m gonna go through the facilities and talk to a couple coaches tonight with some of my old juco teammates Jacoby Jones and JuJu Mitchell then Sunday I’ll be participating in the camp”

I want to take time to say that Shepherd was true to his word. and that TFK has been publicly positive about McKnight.

When Javonne was enjoying his recruiting process, posters ragged on him a bit. But here he is in Austin working his butt off.

I'm willing to bet he has lost more than 30 lbs of body fat. You have to account for the muscle he has put on in workouts plus the fact that at his age his body muscles are going through a hardening process making them more dense and heavier.

All that equals a guy who has not only worked his butt off but kept a strict diet. Very impressive.

Just because I'm bored I was looking over the 20¹9 commitment list trying to figure out who is going to make the biggest impact early. My top pick was Jordan Whittington. I think That's a no brainer. Then it got a little tougher. Next I went with Jake Smith. I think Jake will make an impact in the slot position but he probably won't start right away. Though my next pick is Tyler Johnson I think he will redshirt but he will start as a redshirt freshman, he's got that nasty disposition if I remember his bio correctly. And I hear J. Sheppard is working his tail off so he might be a force in his redshirt freshman season. I also want to say I am looking forward to see what Owens and adimora will do. I think Adimora has good instincts from what I saw in his tapes. But since we are a little thin at linebacker maybe one of those will play early but I am not sure which one. We certainly need to shore up the LB position asap. Floyd would have been one of my top picks to play early. These are my choices from someone who is not as knowledgeable as many of you.

If we are talking just this coming season I gotta go with Whittington, he is already integrated into the offense. If we are talking over all I gotta go with Tyler Owens, he has what I would call 1st round NFL ability.

1. Whittington
2. Smith
(if transfers count, then Braun--obviously)

Diamond in the Rough/Under-appreciated Sleeper = Quez Caldwell, CB Alvin. He was a stud until he got injured in HS. This caused a lot of the other big boys in college football to back off recruiting him. His film shows a very skilled coverage man who hits very hard in run support. He'll probably redshirt, but I think we have a future star in this one.

I forgot about Braun- yeah he makes an impact early. What's was the nature of Caldwell's injury?

Torn labrum (shoulder). We got him early and didn't back off after the injury.

While still serious, I suppose this is better than a knee injury. It's not like he's a baseball pitcher.

More on incoming Freshman Quez Caldwell, CB Alvin (from 247):

"Great height and length for the cornerback position. Owns the wingspan and wiry build typically coveted by college programs today. Height and length translate well to both press coverage and zone, depending on personnel. Shows a willingness to use hands and mix it up at the line of scrimmage. Physical for a corner. Has shown promise in limited opportunities as a blitzer thanks to closing speed. Plays with a nose for the ball. Instinctive player. Should be competent and dependable as a red-zone defender, against timing patterns, and vs. jump balls. Breaks fairly well on the ball for a taller, longer corner, but needs to improve lateral fluidity and short-area foot quickness. Must improve tackling technique and consistency. Can provide the big hit, but sometimes hunts for it unnecessarily and sacrifices the sure play."

His film looked very solid to me on the run support aspect of the position. The above-quoted commentator sees him as a big-hit headhunter with all the natural tools, build, closing speed, and "instinct", but in need of some position coaching work. No doubt he truly enjoys the hitting part of the game. Also bear in mind he missed a lot of game time in HS with his shoulder injury. Sounds like a redshirt with the potential to develop into a big-time star. He's still my pick for the underrated sleeper in the '19 class.

I say him play in high school. Reminded me of Johnnie Johnson or Stanley Richard.
