#14 Okla State--We Win the Series 2-1

Whew....... liner to center field and Thomas stumbled, gathered himself just in time to snag the out and end the threat. 4-0 OSU.

I'm stepping out to enjoy the weather, someone pull hard for these guys, need to get back in this and win it.

Hill climb aborted as the next 3 go in order. 7-2 pokes is your final. Still, we won another conf series which is what ya gotta do.

LBJ is still struggling.

Well, I'll gladly take the series 'V' over Okla State.

Let's get another in Orlando.

:ut::ut:

We're finally getting our house in order, but it's too little too late for the conference race. We're now tied for second with WVA and OSU, but 3 games behind the Sooners (who just completed a sweep of Tech in Lubbock). Oklahoma has only Baylor and Cincinnati left on their schedule, so doubtful we'll be able to catch them.

Days like today which mirror the normal Friday night performance are why Texas in spite of winning series over Tech, TCU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Baylor is still somehow not going to win the Big 12. The Horns will probably scratch their way into the NCAA tournament but lost games like this afternoon or why they will be a two seed somewhere and not hosting and why we may still be sweating them getting into the tournament at all.

I think we're almost a shoo-in to make the tournament unless we drop both of the remaining series.

The question is, are we a 2 seed, or are we a 3 seed. Right now, we're probably a dangerous high 3 seed that no sane host would want to land in their Regional.

Before our OSU series began, these "experts" had us as a 3 seed in the UC-Irvine Regional.

1. UC-Irvine :rolleyes1::rolleyes1::rolleyes1:
2. Arizona :smh:
3. Texas :bevo::bevo::bevo:
4. Grand Canyon :idk:

Our Series W over #14 Okla State can only move us up, probably by a decent jump.

If we get in the UC-Irvine Regional, especially with their projected teams listed above, I'd put us as the odds-on favorite to WIN that Regional. It would be a gift.

Question is, would we been more competitive if Boehm started? LBJ gave up 4 runs. Offense still didn't produce enough runs had they swapped but i'm not sure LBJ should start any more.

A conundrum, if we don't have enough pitching for a third game, as it appeared in this series and most of them this year, then do we put everything into the first two? including using Boehm and Dup to close them?

Starters:

Game 1 - Boehm
Game 2 - Grubbs
Game 3 - Whitehead

Relievers A-Team:

DuPlantier
O'Hara
Lummus
Tumis
LBJ

Relievers B-Team:

Hurley
Hudson Hamilton (he'll get there next year, you'll see)
Tole
Shaw

Relievers we will not see for the rest of this year unless something has gone very wrong:

Howard
Selvig
Harrison
Thomas

And if the starter craps out early, these A-Team relievers can go 4+ innings in long relief:

O'Hara
Lummus
LBJ
Tumis (he's being asked to do A LOT for a true Freshman, regardless of his innate talent)

Also consider: Hurley for long relief (if he's having a good day, flip a coin on that)

Now this looks like a Regional Host level of starting 3 pitchers.

Our bullpen will be a bit on the thin side (Tumis could be the poster boy for our pen). :smh::smh::smh::smh::smh::smh::smh::smh::smh:

LBJ has had the whole season to get it together. I think it's safe to say that Woody Williams performed better last year with LBJ than Pierce.

I still like Boehm coming out of the bullpen, if it's short relief so he can close more than one game in a series. If we're only going to see him once in a weekend anyway, it might make sense to start him and hopefully not get in a hole. It may be a little late in the year to extend his innings though--I'm no pitching coach so I don't know. Duplantier has performed better this year than last year as a short reliever but I still feel better when Boehm is on the mound to protect a lead. Of course, today the offense didn't help--I don't know if any combination of our pitchers would have gotten us a win today.

That's the starting line-up I've wanted ever since everyone (including Pierce belatedly) realized LBJ was not the Friday night guy. I understand the argument of using Boehm sparingly so that he can maybe (maybe!) contribute to more than one game in a series. But a weekend like this, where he only pitches 3 innings the entire weekend, seems like a waste of his talent. It would be like saving your best batter for the 9-spot; it might pay off occasionally, but overall you're getting fewer at-bats from him.

Give,

I can't disagree with your post other than to ask if you were around in the mid 80s when our 9th man in the batting order was our leader in RBIs? I wish I could remember Gus' reply when asked why he didn't move him up in the lineup, but it was typical Gus, dry and made no sense until you experienced it. Gus had a "sixth sense" about him that always seemed to work. Kinda like when he started a transfer from SMU in either the SWC tournament or the regional. Kid had played maybe 5-10 innings all year, batted half a dozen times, yet Gus stuck him in left field. When I asked him "WHY", his response was, "he's been looking pretty good in practice".

Kid was MVP of the tournament, but went back to the bench for Omaha.

Agree and I think it’s safe to say the entire pitching staff performed better under woody than pierce. We were ranked 1st in era in the big 12 and 10th in the nation last year. This year we are ranked 65th. We gave 10 free passes yesterday. Pierce taking over pitching and allowing woody to leave was a mistake. With 15 years in the majors just maybe woody knows a little more about pitching than pierce.

Sabre, I was a student at UT in the mid-eighties but to my great regret I didn't pay attention to baseball at the time (never even went to a game as a student). I love hearing those stories about Gus, though...

Augie had the same sense, I think the great coaches see an elevation of play during the week that they know will translate into great play during a game or weekend an “eye” for details that most don’t see. Whether it’s the player seeing the ball really well in BP or a lively arm, more so than normal. Or they see one guy in his lineup that matches up extremely well with one pitcher on the opposing team.

The main example I can think of is when Carmichael came in the World Series and hit the 2 run bomb. I forget now who it was against, Florida?? At the time that I found out Carmichael was in the line up, I was like, “what is Augie doing here, this guy hasn’t played hardly at all and now he’s in one of the biggest games of the season” and of course, you know the rest. We won the World Series.

I haven’t seen this same “eye” or ability from Pierce. It’s like he’s guessing (like when he was putting Kennedy in the 2 hole and killing the offense)
