Whiskey

I’m not much of a drinker but man, after this documentary I want to start. Any recommendations, not beer? My New Year’s resolution will be to drink more. I don’t drink nearly enough. What’s your Friday evening or belly up to bar drink?

For me and my personal tastes...

Speyside >> Peaty/smoky West of Scotland stuff

Bourbon = fine and smooth, but a bit too sweet for me (same with most big-brand Irish whiskey)

Rye = very good or very bad, not much in between

Anything out of Canada = very good or very bad, not much in between

Anything out of Japan = very, very good (arguably some of the best) or very bad, not much in between

And any of the bad stuff can be cured and converted to a tolerable mixed drink by mixing it with Coke, Canada Dry, or 7 up. But if you do that to anything from Speyside, any of the top 1/2 Japanese stuff, or any Rye actually made in Pennsylvania (not just Pennsylvania-style), go throw yourself into an icy river.

MACALLAN DISTILLERY TARTAN

LC,

Dickie Brennan emails out a "Bourbon of the Month", which is featured at his steakhouse in the French Quarter. You can attend dinner with the CEO of the distillery, hear their story, sample their product to go along with an overpriced meal featuring things I would never eat.

You might start with Markers Mark or Wellers and save the Pappy's until you have acquired a taste. We used to buy Kentucky Beau Bourbon a Sage liquor on Airport Blvd. A little pricey at $2.19 a fifth, but you could always pour it in a Makers bottle to impress your date.

For off-the-shelf mass-market bourbon, it's hard to beat Maker's Mark. I tend to drink it on the rocks. Every now and then, I'll have a bourbon-and-coke.

LC if you currently do not drink the best advice you can get is don’t start. Commercials make it tempting but from a former drinker, sometimes heavy, I can tell you honestly it’s not worth it. Surprise heart surgery has convinced me and I was one of those who could turn it off when I felt I had gone overboard but would go full on the next week. Candidly as the medical advice would say, basically there is nothing good about drinking alcohol.

I do drink but not very much. I'm probably the true definition of a social drinker. I never drink alone. This summer being an exception, I probably average at best, 8-10 alcoholic drinks per year. We bought a house with pool early this year so splurged a little more than usual. My SIL works for a distributor so I would drink whatever he randomly brought.

Not a coffee drinker either.

For the coffee drinkers, Mr. Black might be some of the best liquor available. Far superior to Kahlua.

I sometimes pick up random weird hobbies. Here’s my latest-ice with impurities removed. Specifically cubes and spheres. I think I’d like to market locally if I can perfect a system. Maybe some of you aficionados can tell me if ice matters to you in a cocktail? I don’t really drink, not even coffee. I’ve heard that appearance enhances the appetite eating/drinking experience, so maybe I could find a market. Plus the bigger spheres or cubes dissolve slower so your drink maintains the taste longer. Anyway, thoughts?
