Texas vs Tennessee

Curious which Texas and Tennessee teams show up today.

I was a big Rick Barnes fan, but remember why he was asked to leave: regularly posted 20+ seasons, rarely competed for B12 titles, and almost always flamed out early in the tourney.

I am still not sold on Tournanent Terry’s streetball coaching and poor in game adjustments, but when it works it works.

Very interested to see how this plays out.

Prediction:

Tennessee : 76
Horns: 67

Rick was the best BB coach we have had in my adult lifetime. There are not many mistakes we have made that were bigger than getting rid of him because his program got "stale".

Mind you, we have made far bigger mistakes than parting ways with Barnes (Stevie Patterson comes to mind), just not many of them.

I think your score prediction is very reasonable.

Texas will have to bring their A shooting game and will have to play solid defense and rebound. I’m not sure who will guard knecht. He is listed at 6’6” so is going to be a matchup problem for the guards. My guess is they start with Hunter though he is only 6’. Weaver when he is in and maybe Cunningham. Mitchell is not a good on the ball defender so he is probably not an option. Disu and Abmas will definitely need to be on and a third option will need to step up, which would most likely be Hunter. Weaver will need to continue his solid play.

I would add that this looks like a bad matchup for Texas, but they did take uh to overtime at home and played UConn fairly well on a kinda sorta neutral Court. They also have the ability to get completely steamrolled. Have yo play with urgency and focus and value each possession. Our ball handling is definitely a concern. A Texas win would be an upset, but not a monumental one.

To win, we have to have a LOT go right while Tennessee has some stuff go sideways on them. I think we will play hard, but we just don't have the firepower to finish off the Vols.

I totally agree on Barnes, I loved him; but would say getting rid of Beard, which unfortunately we had to do, will be the biggest mistake we ever made in our Basketball program.

We're in Seattle on a college tour for my daughter and I booked dinner reservations at the same damn time as tip-off.

I'll have to record it and make sure I don't have conflicts for next week's Sweet 16 game.

I don't think anyone would reasonably say that we didn't have a good run under Barnes, but we could no longer ride the Rick Barnes train with the way he handled the 2011-15 collapse. I count no fewer than 9 players on those rosters who were under some sort of investigation, doghouse, or "trial period," and the buck should stop at the head coach. Couple that with how he basically told Myles Turner off midseason until our ****** seed and equally ****** performance against Butler in the tournament, there really was no recovery from that.

We both needed a change of scenery, and Barnes has done about as well at Tennessee as he did here. 6 tournament trips in 9 years, and Tennessee has been upset by a much lower seed in 4 of those trips. About par for the course for old Rick. He turns 70 this summer.

Texas has to hit its threes but can’t just settle for those shots all the time. Got to get to the rim as well. Ugly orange rebounds well so we won’t get many second chance points and we have to limit theirs. Most of all, score more points than they do.

Captain obvious is in the house.
