Putting the loss at KSU behind us, and moving on to the next opponent. This is going to be a difficult matchup for us as well.

Kansas pre-game PC. He mentions that Faye will be available to play. He does not have a status on Gaston.

Vic also discusses Maul, Jak and Jordana.

Thanks for posting that video conference. I always enjoy listening to Vic speak about his team. But, some of the things he says just leave me scratching my head.

- He says that you can't prepare for losing a player like Rori. Overall, that's a true statement. But, he saw in 2022 what life was like on the court with Rori injured those first 8 games or so of the season. Not bringing in a true backup PG in the offseason is solely on the coaching staff; yes, I get they tried somewhat. But, the bottom line is they knew firsthand what an injury to Rori meant to the team.

- He says that he needs to get more out of Maul and Ndjakalenga. Obviously, several posters have commented on their lack of playing time in conference play. I'm assuming Vic is talking about when they are in the game. The thing is, he's not playing them (enough it seems). In our two blowout wins at Tech and WVU, Maul saw the court for 8 and 1 minutes; Ndjakalenga saw the court for 2 and 0 minutes. Against KSU, Maul gets 4 minutes while Ndjakalenga gets 0 minutes. Unless it's a practice thing, that just makes no sense. If you don't play them in road blowouts, how/why would you expect them to produce for you in a tough road environment like at Kansas State? Either he trusts them midway through the season, or he doesn't; hope he figures it out.

With another opponent's big protecting the basket, we really need some offensive output from Shaylee and hopefully, from Shay. I just keep scratching my head over Shaylee's offensive fall off since she transferred to Texas. I don't know if it's the caliber of opponents, Vic's system, or what. Just would like to see her have another 20+ point game.

Shooters need their legs... playing every minute of every game in a defensively aggressive (with a capital A) system, and practicing hard in between those games, has an effect on legs. We need to either get them some rest, or dial back a little bit with our defense. I vote for getting them some rest.

I get the leg rest thingie, but Shaylee dropped 100 points in yearly average after she went to Texas. If she keeps up with the way she's going lately, she'll drop another 100 in average. It seems to me that she passes up a lot of shots, legs or no legs. I know she and Shay are working their tails off defensively, but that only keeps the opponent's score off the board. It doesn't help our tally. I know when UT consistently had Taylor's 16, Madison's 13 (and Rori's 14) Shaylee and Shay's lack of shooting wasn't so hurtful, but it seems in the last 3 or so games, some more attempts could have really helped. I'm still very hopeful that the team and Coach Vic figures things out.

In all fairness, Shaylee's scoring average the first year at Texas dropped because there's obviously a huge difference between playing for BYU in the West Coast Conference and playing for Texas in the Big XII.
As far as this year goes, now that Rori's ability to attack defenses and create openings for others is gone, Shaylee and Shay are much easier to cover due to their lack of ability to attack off the bounce and create for themselves.
One thing we agree on is that Vic definitely needs to figure it out and stop trying to force square pegs into round holes. We've seen it tried in years past, and you don't get real far with that strategy. Hint... maybe watch TCU's motion and ball movement in the half court.

I wish Shaylee would shoot more as well but she is our main three-point threat and teams focus on that. She does need rest as previously stated. (Play Maul more dammit)
Additionally, our team's priority is usually to feed the ball inside to Taylor, because the big girl shoots .658 from the floor which is our best bet to win games.
So Shaylee focuses a lot on working to get the ball inside, and not looking for her own shot.

You figured it out already. It's the caliber of opponents and the defense-first mentality of the system.

Also, Shaylee does not have the quickness to create a 3-pt shot if it's well-defended. Her forte is open shots, and the better teams do not allow as many. In the KSU game, she sank a 3-pointer by allowing the overcommitted defender to flash by her after a clever single-dribble to open space. That, she does very well.

And this is why some of us are frustrated. Although we are playing good right now, now would be a great time to get some minutes from Jak and Maul and he isn’t. It comes off as I’m difficult to please but long game they need to play to get better. (His words)

Loving Amo and Fayes game tonight. Faye looks like she's fighting for a starting position. I like it!

I was just about to post the same thing.:bevo:

And on top of that Shaylee is at 0-3 while she does have 4 ast and 3 Reb but still. I will also admit KU is different with Jackson on the floor she is fast and long.

I didn't see this beat down coming, but I'm glad about it. I'm a little irritated... a lot irritated actually... that the rotation hasn't been extended more.

Andrea is saying that Vic “demands perfection” which is why he pulls his subs after a few seconds … guess I could never be a coach, because I’m ok with second chances, especially in a 36 point blowout …

Great win after Saturday's loss. Everyone played with good energy and the pace was fast. We allowed KSU to dictate the slow pace of the game on Saturday and that in itself played to Lee's advantage. Faye and Moore especially came to play tonight. Lots of mid-range perimeter shots were falling, and that makes the game so much easier for everyone.

KU didn't seem to press all that much if at all; that kept Booker fresh. Even saw Shaylee bringing the ball up the court and some and running the offense. Glad to see 3-pointers falling for Booker; that will make her more dangerous if she finds her touch from beyond the arc.

I swear I remember KU's Jackson being much bulkier in the past. The Jackson I saw tonight was very lanky; am I confusing her with someone else or did she transform her physique? I recall Vic referring to her as an "aircraft carrier" in the past; someone who just takes up space in the paint. I feel like I saw a different player tonight.

Yep, we're up 25+ points most of the second half and Vic just can't bring himself to play Maul, Ndjakalenga, Codio, or Herron. I'd rather see one of them sprinkled in with 4 players who see a lot of action in order to try combinations which might be needed down the road when someone is in serious foul trouble.

Little by little he started playing Ndjakalenga and Maul, but I guess I'd have inserted them earlier as the game was never in doubt as early as most of the second quarter.

Playing Maul, Ndjakalenga, Codio and Herron together with like 2 minutes late in the game doesn't do much as we won't ever see that combination in tight games. Why Moore was in there so late in the fourth quarter had me a bit anxious as we don't need risking her getting injured; she was already dealing with that scratched eye from earlier in the game. While we were in tight game in the last few seconds at KSU, we got Gaston hurt again with less than a second left. Just don't understand the risk having Moore on the court to close out the game.

I would also like to give a shout to Tree Herron her soft hands and post moves ability are promising. Not just tonight but she has really made a impression on me overall in all her mins this season. By her junior year she will be good for us I hope. Also, I f would like to make a case for JAk playing time. She stayed and didn’t transfer and put work in you can tell by her body and play, whether she mess up or does good she plays with everything in her body, and she seems to take your coaching. With that being said I petition for more Jak mins.

I have yet to meet a player who wants less minutes. Starters earn those minutes. Want those minutes. Deserve those minutes. And coming off a close loss to KState they need those minutes so the next close game goes our way.

The place to get better is in the practice gym. Games are 40 minutes and you play to win every minute. A blow out this week is a tight game next week. When Vic subbed in the 4th we simply started trading baskets. That tells me those subs haven’t fully committed to the defense that is expected of them. But, like all of you, I’m simply guessing. There are lots and lots of reasons why someone is or isn’t getting more or less minutes.

Coaches can’t be held hostage by the transfer portal. Some players buy into the system and some don’t. Those that don't shouldn’t be able to take minutes away from those that do. When starters give you a blowout, you don’t thank them by putting them on the bench early.

Amo is clearly working her butt off to get back into shape and contribute. I sincerely doubt she wants to sit on the bench because she might get injured. She had to ride that bench for too many minutes because of injuries. If she can handle 40 I sure as hell would give her 40. But in the end, I’m just a fan sitting in the stands who has no idea what’s going on in the locker room. Which translates into “what the hell do I know?” :idk:

Great win. Now let’s go take down OSU with the same intensity. :beertoast:

I know what you mean. Watch the Kansas/Baylor game. It was like watching a different team. And Jackson even looked bulkier against Baylor. Tonight we made her look like a tall high school player.
