Texas' NCAA 2024 Tournament

Ahead of the selection show, predictions.
D1Softball Bracketology: The Final Postseason Projections of 2024

The implication is that IF this is correct and Texas is #1 and A&M is #16, then A&M would come to Austin for the Super Regional. Last year's regional was pretty heated with cops walking the concourse because the upset Aggies (didn't like the umps calls) were starting to get out of control. (You'd have to dig into the archives to see my writeup of what happened - but they were really poor sports).

Went back to look at the archives from last year's regional and I forgot one of the assistant Aggie coach got ejected because he was so frustrated with the calls:

And re-read my writeup. I forgot about the Aggie grandma flipping off the umps and the Longhorn fans.

I was at the game last year and the aggie fans were down right malicious! They would have been out on the field if a screen had not been there! The tv cameras did not even begin to capture how awful they were! After the game they were very vocal about how they got screwed by the umps in Austin!
I really hope they are not in our super regional! They bring so much hate and negativity with them!

As I expected, my prayers were not answered! The Aggies are in our Super regional bracket!! Texas State really got screwed IMO having to play in the same bracket as atm. Not much reward to win your conference and you get to travel 90 miles to college state….again!! My next prayer is that Texas State beat the ags. Bottom line is you beat whoever is in your bracket. Hook’em!

I know that Texas St can beat A&M once. But twice? Mmmm.

Looked up Siena. They are 33-20. They were ranked 6th (out of 6 schools) in the MAAC tournament and won their tournament.....making them AQ for the tournament. Good for us. Surprising trip for them. So, everyone's a winner (not really, we want it to be us).

Got charged for the Regional tickets this morning by UT ticket office. Yay. Now have to wait for the "Sorting Hat" to tell me what I get.

I was thinking that getting this #1 seed was the reason we brought Mike in. Not literally the number, #1 but building up the program so it could be consistently great.

I know Mike, as the Oregon coach, had gotten a #1 ranking before. But going back and looking at his tenure at Oregon from 2010 - 2018, I was surprised to see multiple top 3 rankings. Yes, a ranking doesn't equate to success, that's why "we play the game!"

2013 #3 - Loses in their Super Regional to Nebraska(!)
2014 #1 - Wins their Super Regional over Minnesota. In WCWS loses to Alabama and Florida, both who play for championship with Florida winning the whole thing
2015 #2 - Beats NC State to win their Super Regional. Loses to UCLA and Alabama in the first round of the WCWS
2017 #3 - Wins their Super Regional beating Kentucky. Loses to Washington in the first and eventual NC OU in the semis
2018 #1 - Upset by Kentucky (#16) in their Eugene Super Regional

2019 - hired to Texas

2019 #9 - Loses to Alabama in the Tuscaloosa Regional
2020 - COVID
2021 #12 - Loses to OSU in Stillwater Regional
2022 unranked - Loses to OU in final of WCWS
2023 #13 - Loses to TN in Knoxville Super Regional

Why did I put this together? I guess to guage Mike's temperature leading a team highly ranked or lowly ranked to see the results. I think 2022 shows the team can get hot at just the right time and not needing to be home or even have a ranking.

And the Oregon 2018 team makes me think.......don't look too far ahead.

While looking at our bracket, we have an actually tough bracket. The girls are really going to have to work hard and play clean ball. I thought as the #1 seed you’re supposed to have the “easiest route” to the championship. I think it’s crazy that we get Northwestern in our regional. Just due to the fact that they were regular season B1G champions as well as we were regular season Big 12 champions. Their RPI is also 29 if we get out of our regional then comes supers.

Now as we go to the 16 seeds.
1. Texas
2. Oklahoma
3. Tennessee
4. Florida
5. Oklahoma State
6. UCLA
7. Missouri
8. Stanford
9. LSU
10. Duke
11. Georgia
12. Arkansas
13. Louisiana
14. Alabama
15. Florida State
16. Texas A&M

Let me just say. Duke is way too low and Alabama if anything should’ve been seeded 16th. They had a losing record in the SEC and lost first game of the SEC tournament. Texas A&M finished 3rd in the SEC and made the semifinals of the SEC tournament as well as beating Alabama in their conference series. I also feel like Stanford and Missouri should’ve been swapped. Texas A&M should’ve been 14 at the least possibly 13th but 16th is crazy. I feel like we should have drew Florida State or Alabama especially considering the fact that we shutout Florida State already 10-0. Florida State has a team ERA of 3.67 but they’re being sent to OU instead where OU is gonna have the easier route to the WCWS by clobbering FSU’s pitching. Meanwhile we have to go against good pitching with Texas A&M but then I get it. The ole Texas and Texas A&M rivalry were have tv ratings and ticket sales. I get it but again not fair.

If we somehow make it to the WCWS we will most likely face Stanford or LSU the very first game (teams who both beat us this season) while OU faces Missouri. The seedings and selections were wild. I still believe we could do it but it’s gonna be tough.

On Twitter, one of the folks who help run a softball pay site posted multiple reasons why Duke got such a poor seeding. Basically they had a very poor SOS and didn't beat anyone in the all-important "first quadrant".

Northwestern is interesting in that Texas was supposed to play them in the Clearwater tournament - but got scrubbed due to weather.

And Alabama, everyone agreed got a higher seed then their record seemed to indicate. It was one of those seeds where their brand helped them compared to other schools not traditionally in the tournament.

Coach White was quoted saying something like "The game doesn't care who you have played or what your record is..." If we are as good as our record/ranking is then nothing else matters. If we play our best game we will win against anyone.:bevo:

It actually annoys me these committees take into account things like rivalries or former coaches when making brackets/seedings instead of simply ranking the teams based on who is the best or worst. Enough of the cute ****.

This is past history! This team will bring home the national championship!!!

Does anyone recall anytime an athlete in another sport joined Texas Softball? I remember Nadia Taylor suiting up for WBB after her playing days for softball was done.

I'm pulling for Southwest Texas State Teachers Normal School/College/University to leave the abnormal aggys in Kolage Stayshun.

If you compare the final RPI rankings against the tournament seeding there is a BIG disparity!
Okie lite with a 12 RPI and a 5 seed in the tourney.
Duke with a 3 RPI and a 10 seed in the tourney.
Just to name a few! I think ESPN had some input on the final bracket!

If you get a chance to listen to the podcast, Mike talks about that.

1. Gee, interesting that A&M is seeded so they'd show up at our Super Regional
2. There's no coincidence that Oregon is playing in OU's Regional. Wink-wink.

We probably win this game but we have had too many undisciplined swings. Other wise a good defensive and pitched game by Mac.:bevo:
