Texas @ Houston 02/14/24

As Vic stated in his presser, the Coogs will apply pressure which will allow us to attack, especially with the dribble drive offense. It will be a good test of our ability to get downhill, as well as our ball security. I'm hoping Maul and Mwenentanda get some good minutes and play well... also hoping we get Hadi back. We are going to need them with the back-to-back Big XII tournament games for winners, then the NCAA tournament with one day in between games.

And Tai Dillard, who played on Texas’ last final 4 team, is the associate head coach.

I have 3 floor tickets court side next to the Longhorns bench for tonight's game but my family and I are under the weather and are unable to go. If you want the tickets for free, give me your email address and I'll send you the tickets to add to your apple wallet.

From the TV broadcast, this looks to be the smallest crowd I’ve seen for one of our games, other than the Covid season. Pretty sad even for cougar high standards.

I have no issue with the home team wearing all pink uniforms, but Texas as the road team should be wearing their white uniforms and not the burnt orange ones. I think that's the reason why Aaliyah Moore purposely passed that ball to a Houston player on our last possession before the half ended.

With Hadi missing game four now, and everyone so mum, I believe she's taking some type of personal time out. IMO
That's probably the most optimistic outlook; hope you are right. The other extreme is that she is no longer on the team.

Well, you know, if she isn't why doesn't Vic just say so. It would be pretty lousy this late in the season.:(

I recall it took him quite a while to say Kyndall Hunter was no longer on the team; forgot if he said she was "dealing with family matters" her second season or that was the excuse he provided her first season.

I don’t think he ever said it, did he? She just kind of faded away.

We have this odd habit of hanging with a team in the first quarter, getting a small to decent lead going into the half, building on that lead in the third, but then kind of cooling our jets to end the game. I guess I’m relieved we’re not blowing the leads like we did under Karen. Happy for the road win, but this game was a bit of a snooze. :idk:

We got the win and I'm happy about that. However, I have to confess that I'm seeing things that really concern me. This is a couple of games in a row where we've gotten the road win but looked inconsistent (and rather at times) with our play.

What this team is missing the most is your explosive guard like UofH's Laila Blair; no doubt she was the best scoring guard on the floor last night as she has every shot (not counting Booker as I label her a point forward). We have trouble shutting them down, and we don't have anyone to match their output on a consistent base; seems like we face one every game.

We had 2 three-pointers last night; UofH had 8 made. The 3-point shot is such an equalizer and it's one of the reasons why the final margin of victory was 16 points instead of 20+ points.

It seems to me that Vic’s game plan was to feed the post, hence Gaston’s stellar performance and Moore’s efficient production. Not sure 3 pointers were green lit for some. It’s easy to nitpick. On to Iowa State.

And, I'm fine with that gameplan when we can dominate inside and are getting high percentage shots. But, when our inside game is being stymied, we haven't shot enough 3-pointers in most games to have the confidence to make them in games where we are trying to come back from behind and desperately need them (like in the OU game; our "comeback" consisted mainly of 2-point shots when we needed the 3-point shot to narrow the gap more quickly, and in the final minute). I guess if you don't "practice" those 3-point shots in less-pressurized games (like last night), how do you expect to make them in pressure situations?

From my viewpoint, Shaylee has been passing up open 3 point opportunities to pass to a teammate or drive into the lane for a pull up jumper. Although Maul is getting more playing time, she isn't even looking to score. I understand that they are following the gameplan but we could benefit from Maul getting into a rhythm offensively and draining outside shots.

The lack of productivity from the wing positions, due to lack of athleticism and/or skills, is what is most concerning to me. We are going to struggle against teams that possess such, because we are also defensively challenged in those situations.

Shaylee's offensive production has deminished terribly. Don't know why. She was 0-2 from the 3 line & hit 1 of 2 FT. Total 5 points. Her D is still tenetious.

This game seemed kinda ho hum to me. No one appeared especially excited or fired up. I hope they're saving that for the Iowa State game because that's a team that is definitely both of the above.

Watched the game on delay. And every time Houston hit a 3, I kept thinking that it's not a good sign when we meet up with OU. Maybe Vic said to let them take their shots and concentrate on defending the paint. But OU is the one we're chasing and they hit the 3's.

If you can get the points in the paint, that’s always the better, higher-percentage shot. Last night we had a whopping 54 points in the paint and 14 free throws. But I agree that we don’t always adjust to an outside game when the opposing team effectively disrupts the lane. Maybe I just don’t get it, but isn’t that why you recruit someone like Gonzales :idk:

We have a long, long history spanning multiple coaches of recruiting and then effectively killing outside shooters. I feel like the last great 3-point shooter who defied that trend was Jamie Carey. But maybe I’m forgetting someone since her.

Listening to Vic talk about Kadija, it sounds like she has an illness, but because or privacy issues he's unable to talk about it. It could be COVID.

UCLA starter Lauren Betts recently missed four consecutive games and it was never disclosed why. We don’t always get to know the reasons for games missed. Otherwise we couldn’t rag on the coach for non disclosure and make wild speculation as to the cause.

Gonzalez must have been recruited for her other scoring abilities, hard work ethic, and the thought that she would be capable of backup PG duties. She shot the 3FG at .221 in her last season at BYU.
:idk:
