I only have one, Giordano's in Chicago area.

Incidentally, not many people know, but Ike Sewell, former UT football player, was instrumental in the creation Chicago deep dish pizza. He started Pizzeria Uno. It took a Texan and Longhorn at that, to create the pizza Chicago is now famous for.

This is getting off subject, but I LOVE Portillos! Their chili was so freakin' good, and I also had a hotdog. I just loved seeing all the Blackhawks and Bulls gear everywhere. I could do without the Bears stuff. :/

For me, in Chicago, it's Lou Malnati's. DiG's is good, no, great, but I give Lou's the nod by a mm.

We should probably just make a Chicago appreciation thread. :)

Trust me, there isn't too much to appreciate about Chicago. The city is nice to visit occasionally. Don't get me started on the weather, traffic, lousy roads, inability to make right turns at most red lights, it goes on and on....uphauling.

But the pizza is good. :)

Well, I haven't had a chance to eat it in years, but I loved Conan's Deep Dish Pizza on whole wheat crust when I lived in Austin a quarter century ago.

Oh, that's sad to hear. When I visited I fell in love with the city. The people were kind everywhere I went, it had that big city feel, but was still clean. It's such a pretty city too, not like New York. I felt like it had the best of both worlds, the culture and scene, but still green and the lake was just gorgeous.

But alas, I was just a tourist and don't know what it's like to really live there. I guess I'm glad I can enjoy it and appreciate it while on vacation.

Yep, great to visit, and to be fair, some Texans assimilate, but I just tolerate it at this point. Texas football watching is fun with the Exes.

He is right, for the most part it's a **** hole. Fun to visit specific parts but don't stray far. The vast majority is shite. Some cities around it like Skokie, Niles, etc. (out Touhy way) are for pretty okay but nothing special, just burb type cities. I will say this, the driving there and esp. the drivers, ******, ******, ******. They take rude to a new level. It was amazing to behold and I was all over the city. I was in nice parts and really bad parts. REALLY bad. This was for a solid two week period.

There are nice people everywhere and in every city and I was amazed how nice people were when out of their cars. It's like there is a class in the schools to learn how to be really aggressive.

For fun, there is a leaning tower of Pisa in front of a YMCA near the border of Skokie and Niles. Makes a fun photograph. I found elements there I loved such as Mariano's Supermarkets and World Market (phenomenal supermarket which had 95% of stuff from outside of the U.S. and a produce section that was fantastic). But the roads are viciously horrible and many don't even have lanes or stripes on them. Seriously.

If you really want to see Chicago, start in Skokie and drive up and down Cicero till you get way past Midway. Do it in the day time. Your chances are better. I am going back for a dj gig in a couple of months and know exactly where I will go, what I will do and where I won't be going. There are not many other cities I go to that I am that specific. And I lived in the worst or just about worst part of D.C. in the early 90s when it was the most dangerous city. Chiraq, it's special.

yes, definitely a Savage on whole wheat (cut the anchovies)--man, I'm hungry now--thought this thread was in regards to places to eat in Austin (or at least in Texas)

Ahh Conan's - yeah I ate there all the time during lunch breaks at Crocket HS. Kinda got sick of it, but looking back I remember it was good, and very unique.

Now living in NJ and going into NYC a lot, I've been trying to come up with a quintessential pizza from here, but for the most part, it's a lot of very good pizza places that tend to blend together. It's kind of like in Texas, except replace "taco" with "pizza" - basically it's everywhere. Having been to the original Grimaldi's, I can say that it's pretty hard to beat.

I have to agree on the Giordano's. Love the stuffed pizza. I lived there for two years and worked right around the area snek mentions - On Touhy in Niles right at the Skokie border. As he says, up there, all the burbs run together and pretty much indistinguishable.

For those in Dallas area, I'd recommend trying i Fratelli - good crispy crust and loaded with toppings.

agree with beatha on i Fratelli. The big brother is the bomb. The ultimate pizza for me would be Chicago Style (Pizzarria Uno around here) but i Fratelli is great, with the bonus that my wife likes it too.

I just drove by that Conan's Pizza near Crockett HS. Realized it's been a while since I visited. Now I'll have to go and get a Savage on whole wheat after reading this thread.
