I just spoke to Ricky. Visiting hours at the funeral home on Wednesday will be from 1-7 pm. From 1-3, Jose will be in the small visitation room and after 3:30 or so, visitation will continue in the large visitation room.

After the funeral on Thursday, there will be a reception at Scholz's in the north party room.
I'm sure there will be some sort of informal gathering after the rosary to celebrate Jose's life but the location has not yet been determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jose's name to the American Heart Association in memory of his mother, Rose and to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in memory of his sister, Stella.

Friends are encouraged to bring photos to the rosary Wednesday. There will be several photo boards available as well as counter space. Please write you name on the back of you photos so that they can be returned to you.

Texas flags are welcomed at the rosary and funeral.

This evening (in Austin) there will be an informal get together to celebrate Jose's life beginning between 7:30 and 8:00 pm at El Gallo's Restaurant located at 2910 S. Congress. It's between Ben White and Oltorf, directly across from St. Edward's University on the west side.

El Gallo's was one of Jose's, and his family's, favorite Mexican places. He always ordered the cabrito or little goat every time he went there.

Please let me know if you would like to come. The party room, which is to the left of the cash register when you come in, has been reserved. I need to let El Gallo's know approximately how many will be attending.

Please e-mail me at [email protected] or call 462-2803 and leave a message if you would like to join us.

Tomorrow night, after the Rosary for Jose, there will be a gathering (ie tailgate) at Disch-Falk for those that wish to participate. I will supply SOME beer and plenty of ice, coolers and some chairs.

I expect we'll be there for awhile if you would like to stop by. Any and all that knew Jose are welcome.

The services for Jose were absolutely beautiful and a totally fitting tribute to our dear friend.

The rosary was a packed house full of Jose's family and friends. The flowers were beautiful, almost all of which were displays of orange and white. Of the many arrangements, one was from our football office and another from the baseball office. The foyer was full of scrap books and big collages of pictures detailing the life of this incredible man.

After the rosary, his many friend from the Wild Bunch and the whole Longhorn family gathered at Disch-Falk for our own kind of wake. Ice chests full of beer and lawn chairs full of friends. And somewhere Jose was laughing when the UT cops "busted" us sometime after midnight and tried to run us off.

The funeral itself again was a packed house. Of the many mourners, Coach Augie Garrido, Asst. Coach Tommy Harmon, and (I believe) Special Assistant Howard Herrera were among them. There were so many people there that I could well have missed any other representative from our coaching staffs, but their presence was much appreciated.

The internment was, of course, very difficult for all of us. I don't know the name of the artist who played guitar at the graveside along with a fellow on the harmonica, but it was touching -- heart-breaking -- but exactly the perfect way to send Jose into the by-and-by.

Afterwards, we all went to Sholtz's (of course!). More tears were shed, but mostly more laughs in remembering the many, many stories about Jose.

I intend to put together something of a memorial page on HornFans as a further tribute to Jose. Please post your condolences and memories of Jose at The Link
