Road trip to Salzburg, Österreich

I'll post more as the visit goes on. (None of these are even in the city of Salzburg). I'm very blessed to be able to live in the UK and previously Germany. However, if I could live anywhere in the world, this would be it. I just love the Salzburg area.

Will do! I'm heading to Salzburg tomorrow for the Christmas Market. I should be able to get some pretty decent shots of the city from there. I may try to go up to the fortress. There should be spectacular views from there.

Well, they don't heat it much, so it wouldn't cost too much. It was probably about 45 degrees inside.

There were almost no tourists..Austria was still depressed from WW2. I was back 4 years ago to Vienna and Salzburg. both were exponentially more crowded.

We like the fall, winter, and early spring for travel. It's cheaper, less crowded, and the lack of AC isn't an issue. (They make heating a big priority, so keeping warm isn't much of a challenge in the winter.) Furthermore, in many of countries in Europe, you have things like Christmas markets, spring festivals, fall festivals, etc.

Summer is the worst time. Though Europe isn't as hot as the US, hot days do happen fairly regularly, and AC can be hard to come by. It's also when Americans tend to visit Europe, so it's crowded. If we travel in the summer, we usually go to the be US to visit family and enjoy air conditioning. (We live in the UK.)

Believe it or not, no. I lived in Germany for 7 years and visited southern Bavaria several times, and though stopped in Berchtesgaden to eat lunch, I never made it to Kehlsteinhaus. We'll return. It's one of our favorite areas in Europe, and I'll want to take Deez, Jr. there when he's old enough to study WWII.

Honestly, it's a shame they had to destroy the Berghof. That place would have been friggin' cool.

Munich to GP and then to Salzberg, I could have lived there forever. In fact I almost moved to Mittenwald about 25 years ago.

When you take your son to Munich, be sure and explain to him; 1) that the land where the Olympic Stadium is landfill comprised of war ruins; and 2) the 45th ID took over the Hoffbrau Hose as their Headquarters after they captured the city.

And I'll definitely take him and point that out to him. He hasn't been to Munich since he was 2, so he doesn't remember it at all. In fact I was thinking about this a few days ago.

Mrs. Deez loves those. She first got them at the Augustiner Bräustübl Müllnerbräu, which is a great beer hall in Salzburg, and she goes ape **** to get them every time we go back.
