Next Coach

I was devastated when we lost Beard.

In my opinion he was a once in a lifetime coach that could have been our Dean Smith, Coach K, Bobby Knight, et al.

After Beard was fired I thought Rodney did an admiral job filling in, but to be honest I thought, with the talent we had, we should have been playing for a championship last year. The reason we didn’t was coaching.

I understand after stepping up and keeping the train on the rails we had to offer Rodney the job, but the reality is I never felt he would be successful or that he was a realistic long term solution.

Rodney Terry is a .540 coach 196–167

He has never won a conference, but has won two conference tournament championships.

2 of his 3 head coaching jobs were promotions after the previous head coach had been dismissed. The only head coaching job he was recruited for as a head coach lasted 3 years and resulted in .435 record and no greater than a 5th place conference ranking.

Rodney Terry is a great assistant coach, recruiter, and by most accounts human being, but is not a major program head coach.

It is time to start looking.

I think we give him a season of watered-down SEC basketball before we really start worrying about the eventual change. This season has been "parity is so good for the game!" from the get-go. When teams like KU are losing to unranked opponents, everyone's due for one pretty much every week.

But I agree that he ain't it. I said it on the Beard thread from last season, but RT spent so much time in 2022-23 trying to be the glue to keep everyone on the mission that things like fundamentals, scheme, portal-studying, recruiting, and the day-to-day operations seem to be lacking. Last night's loss looked a lot like the 2017 team (Smart's second year with virtually no recruits or returners) where no one could compete. No plan. Just "meh."

You alluded to my main concern: in his other stops, no one respected him. Media, opponents, etc. Good guy? Sure. Good coach? Probably not. He's basically just a body everywhere he's been.

The only way to get things turned around is going to be getting a couple of real difference makers in the portal, and since Terry didn't do that after an E8 appearance it's certainly not likely after a mediocre season. Unless Kevin Durant II is coming in and I don't know who that would be.

A season in the SEC getting beat by Calipari, Barnes and Beard certainly isn't going to help. It's only going to prolong the misery and make Texas basketball look like Texas football under Strong and Herman. Doing less with more will be the recruiting anthem for other coaches and even NIL $ won't buy good players. CDC needs to be looking now.

My guess is that Terry gets at least another year and probably two. On another note, in Jerry Palm's bracketology, the Horns are nowhere to be found. Not surprising and that won't change unless they go on an unlikely run of wins.

If Texas shits the bed the rest of the season and we lose our recruits I dunno.... a lot of us saw the writing on the wall last year.

I wouldn’t blame RT for not winning the championship last season. One might point the finger at Beard for the situation he found himself in that cost him his ‘dream’ job.

Texas is not a good basketball team. Looks like they will battle okie state for last place. It looks like all the fears of making Terry the head coach are coming true.

Ucf just destroyed them in the second half and on Texas home court. This team has not come together at all. Just can’t see them winning more than five conference games and given what I saw in the second half, that is probably a stretch.

Lack of effort, soft defense down the stretch lost this one. No offensive scheme, other than launching 3’s. Points to poor coaching.

Terry looked despondent and down rather than getting on the guys. Gonna be a long season

The offense against the zone looked like Smart’s offense here. Every team in this conference can take Texas guards on offense at will. Shedrick may still be injured, but he is very soft for a big. Oh well, on to baseball.

I may have to rethink Terry getting two years if it goes as bad as it looks like it will this year.

Barring a total collapse (i.e. they win only 1-2 games the rest of the year) I suspect Terry gets next year to get this ship righted. But keep in mind, he has an "if we have to move him on we can" friendly contract so if he has to move on this isn't an economic decision where you ride out an extra year type deal.

agree we may not be very good - but I think there is plenty of talent to be better than this - I think there is talent there to be top 25 - this team plays with no grit or determination on either end of the floor - when the going gets tough, sometimes you just have to grind it out -the second half last night was just a preview of things to come - unfortunately, I don't think this staff can fix it

The ship was right when he took over.

Moving Horton to the starting lineup against his old team was shrewd, but literally nothing else worked down the stretch against UCF.

Brock = still absent in spite of (wasted) minutes

Hunter did a better job allowing others to be the scorers, but if you can't D up when we need you to, then what's the point? Guards shouldn't be missing FTs at that tick either.

UCF came in with the goal of controlling Disu and they did.

We basically sold our soul for this new smallish arena for the home court advantage, and other than the Gonzaga game last year, it hasn't worked. RT has done absolutely nothing to harness any kind of advantage. No excitement. No drive. Dawkins is doing more with way less at UCF this year.

The first post on this topic was very well put together and stated what I said last year. He as never been a winning coach on his own and what we have seen in the start of conference goes along with his history. He is a very good rep for Texas, just not a good head coach. This is just a matter of time before he, or CDC or both decide we need a different direction/leader.

I did like the fact that last night in the hand shake line he went directly at the classless ucf players with the horns down. That is not how Johnny Dawkins rolls so I suspect he will deal with it. Had we put forth a better product that would not have been an option. We just have zero identity as a team.

Last year the team had tough leaders, Carr, Rice, Allen and it showed on the defensive end of the court, rebounding (they weren't the best, but adequate) and hitting clutch shots. This team doesn't seem to have any leaders and Terry does not appear to have any answer. From the top down, they looked lost last night and that has happened many times this year. YMCA competition masked that. In the last 6-7 minutes of the game, once ucf came back, they made every hustle play and got just about every 50-50 ball. To me, that is a reflection of the identity of the coaches. Beard was intense, sometimes over the top, but that stayed with the team after he was dismissed. I should add that losing Holland was a killer. I watched some of his G-league highlights and he certainly would have made a difference.
