LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Scoring Structure

The University of Texas is very proud of winning the Learfield Directors Cup. A HUGE accomplishment when you look at the current scoring structure. The University of North Carolina won the award in its inaugural year, but then Stanford University won the Division I award for 25 straight years until the streak was broken in 2020–21 and 2021-22 by the University of Texas.

Scoring for Division I: Count 19 sports with the following breakdowns
Four of which must be Baseball and Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball and Women's Volleyball
The next highest 15 (max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, will be used in the standings

With addition of Beach Volleyball Texas now has 21 NCAA sports teams they participate in. So at the end of the year Texas can use the NCAA finish of 19 of their sports toward the Learfield Directors Cup scoring structure.
Stanford's dominance at the Division I level is largely attributed to them sponsoring 36 sports teams, the most in Division I. Thus Stanford can use 19 of their sports team finishes toward the LDC scoring!!
Damn Amazing what CDC has done in his time at Texas!!

A more detailed explanation of the LDC scoring structure can be seen at the below web site:

Yes, every sport but football contributed points to the Learfield cup last year. For the year before, I think it was every sport but soccer (maybe one other at most). In short, our football programs have been horrendous relative to our other sports.

Texas fields 20 varsity scholarship sports while Stanford has 36. It amazes me we ever win this award considering they have almost as many more sports than what we have in total. Think about that for a minute, Texas won 15 conference championships out of 20 sports. That's crazy! Those five must be feeling a little insecure and under achieving right now. :smile1:

The top 19 sports count towards the cup standing, so Texas has only 2 spare sports while Stanford has 17 excess sports (the original post says Texas has 21 sports with beach volleyball). In essence, Stanford has a mulligan for every sport that counts towards the standings.

We have an AD Chris Del Corleone who waits at a cemetery in a town called Snook when he is pursuing a hot coach
Who gonna compete with that guy? Nobody that's who

For those who are geography challenged (like my daughter) Snook is on the road between Brenham and Collie Station.

This is extremely interesting to watch how Texas came in as the year progressed to win the Learfield Directors cup!!
