Jhoon Rhee, Father of American Tae Kwon Do and UT alum dies

Jhoon Rhee came to Texas and went to San Marcos initially. He transferred to Texas in 1960. He studied for 2 years and taught TKD. His first Black Belt was Allen Steen from Dallas, and his second was J. Pat Burleson from Fort Worth. I came under the J. Pat Burleson umbrella in Fort Worth.

In 1962, he was given an opportunity to move to D.C., where he opened a school and developed TKD in the US.

He died earlier today at 86.

I briefly studied with Al Garza as a kid in the Houston area and he was heavily influenced by Jhoon Rhee. RIP.

Very cool. I know who he is. Mr. Garza is one of the well known fighters from the Texas Blood and Guts Era.

I don't know who he is, but growing up in Fort Worth, there was a well known TKD guy named Won Park. He also had a martial arts supply connected to his school.
