Coach Vic Schaefer

Near the end of the Gonzaga game, when victory was in hand, I relaxed and started thinking about this achievement. But more importantly who achieved this. And then the announcers said it as well, "This will be Texas' third Elite Eight in four years". It just seems that Vic has been here much longer, but that's what happens when you get up in age, time starts speeding up on you.

Looking it up on the internet, the number of Elite Eights in our Texas coaching history:
Jody Conradt: 8
Gail Goestenkors: 0
Karen Aston: 1
Vic Schaefer: 3

You think about it, what coach has had such quick success when taking over a historic program that was trending downward?

I heard Bum Phillips once say this, "He (Bryant) can take his'n and beat your'n, and then he can turn around and take your'n and beat his'n". The fact that Vic took members of Aston's last team that went 19-11 (yes with the stop for Covid) and then turn around go 21-10 and into the Elite Eight had me saying, "Yes! This man can coach!"

I do remember the, uhhh, coolness of some longtime Texas fans saying things along the line of:
  • Ugh, a man? We have enough male coaches. Texas has always been progressive in hiring female coaches [cough, cough Rod Page], why did we hire a man?!
  • Vic's a good coach, but getting up there in years. How's he going to relate to these kids?
  • His offense and defense is like Karen's. What's the point in hiring another Karen?
  • Nah. This job is just a stepping stone for him. He's waiting for A&M to open up
  • Didn't he choke in the national title game?
  • An Aggie?
  • He hasn't coached in Texas for a long time, he won't be able to recruit!
  • Great, another defense-first coach
  • I hear he has a constant trickle of kids leaving his program
  • Seems fake, like a fake country bumpkin
Anyway, any of you remember those comments?

Honestly, I was stunned he would take the Texas job because he was an Aggie and was licking his chops waiting for Gary Blair to retire. But, I can see from his perspective why he wanted to come. Better recruiting (more kids willing to go to Austin than live in the sticks) and strong, historical backing from Texas administration.

Just because I'm writing nice things about him by pointing out all the negative nellies out there doesn't mean we're definitely getting into the Final Four, cart before the horse and all that. But man, our third Elite Eight in 4 years when we were conditioned over the years to get bounced at the Sweet Sixteen.

But, with Vic......

I just checked the status on the Naismith Coach of the Year award and they apparently trimmed the list 5 days ago without me seeing it and Vic didn't make the final cut. What??? Are you fu*king kidding me???? But then I see who did make the final cut - Staley, Lisa Bluder (give me a damn break), the USC coach, and Tara (What the actual f**k????????????). That award is complete trash at this point.

When Texas hired Vic I was ecstatic and couldn’t imagine a better hire. I was very surprised we landed him, but once he was here I knew he would not bolt for A&M because it was clear he couldn’t possibly be in a better position. And he knew it!

One hundred percent!

I wasn't negative but honestly I wasn't sure. Texas is a big deal no matter the sport. I have been wrong a few times with a few different sports so I took the wait and see approach. Many can't handle the bigness of the University of Texas. Coach Vic has. :bevo:

When Mack Brown arrived, he did so with DKR's imprimatur. That was good enough for me.

Similarly, when Vic arrived, he had Jody's. Again, good enough for me.

Great points all…also I note the parallels with Sark and the football program.

I don’t remember anyone second-guessing the hire. I was thrilled and loved that he was Coach Conradt’s choice.

1,000% Racer, spot on.

I was saying at the time, no one gets more from his players than Vic does. He took two Mississippi State teams to the national championship games with ZERO McDonald's All-Americans.

And here we were with 9-11 McDonald's All-Americans on the roster every season and we only got past the Sweet 16 once.

The other gripe we heard was: No way Texas is going to pay that kind of money to land Vic.

Yet, CDC and Jodie Conradt BOTH wanted Vic as well. I'm sure glad he had no issues wearing burnt orange.

I remember being stunned, excited, and elated when Vic was hired. I don't recall there being much if any negative posts on message boards or social media about the hire as he was a proven winner.

I recall when Sarah Andrews (now at Baylor) was making her official visits as a high school senior. Her first visit was to Texas. I believe her next visit was to Mississippi State; post-visit she was quoted with comments to the effect that she was unbelievably impressed with how Vic conducted his practices. I knew at that moment that Aston did not compare to Vic's coaching x's and o's. I gave up on getting Andrews at that moment; but, at least we ended up getting Vic, and I'll take that trade!

I and a couple of longtime supporters friends were not happy the way Aston was treated in a covid cut short season and with some throwing of shade on her accomplishments. There was no anger at the new coaching selection. Maybe just Aston, who was a solid recruiter, and who had demonstrated some success was not given enough time. I know we were losing players to the transfer portal. Today, we do see what makes Vic special. He has made it so players really accomplish the most success in his system. His defense and offense is very purposeful. Yes, sometimes, we do not pull it off, but there is a plan. This team is so much fun to watch.

I thought Gail was a home run hire, thought Karen was unproven, and knew we’d landed one of the best we could get with Vic.

I had concerns about Gail, after living in the Carolinas and watching her success at Duke. I knew that Texas and the B12 would be a real change for her. Not sure I can describe it, but the regional culture was just different from Austin and Texas. Glad that she had a winning record for us, even though we didn't replicate the '80s. Also glad we've got Vic, who, I believe, is genuinely thrilled by the resources and possibilities at Texas.

I was thrilled when we picked Gail, but even she admitted that Texas from afar was very different than Texas up close. Wasn’t thrilled with Karen, but eventually admitted she moved the needle… just a bit. If her coaching had been as good as her recruiting… alas. Vic, however, was the absolute right choice. Glad we have him.
