This is undoubtedly the worst design I have ever seen for a coin. What, did the U.S. Mint outsource the design to China and hire a toy company with experience making plastic play money for children?

LITNIN is right and has found the problem IMO. Pennies cost more to make than they are worth. Do we really need them?

There are words written in Latin on that coin!!! Latin! You know what else is latin? People from Latin America, that's what.

This is just another way Obama is giving away our country to the illegal immigrants!!!

WTF was the idea behind redesigning all our coins in the first place? Waste of time and money, over 50 different quarters that are indistinguishable from foreign coins without close examination. And since the Susan B. Anthony dollar was a failure, let's make another one with a different face so it can be a failure too. Was this just to satisfy collectors? Here's a flash...if you want the dollar coin to succeed, you have to eliminate the dollar bill. And while you're at it, get rid of the penny, dime, and half dollar. Who the hell decides this stuff?

Hundred dollar bills should be shaped like a trapezpoid so it would be hard for the drug dealers to stack them up neatly by the millions.

And why not make them out of epoxy? that would certainly make for some strange legal tender,no?

I got one of the new pennies last week and thought somebody had snuck in a bus token.

Just have the Fed print a few trillion more and we'll be able to use the dollar as the lowest denomination and do away with metal tender altogether. Problem solved.

The logic of keeping the penny as I've read it has to do with rounding issues. Every cost transaction a consumer makes essentially rounds up. If the penny was removed in favor of the nickel then all retail and banking transactions would essentially round up 5 cents. The costs to the consumer (and economy) would be enormous.

I don't know how that logic holds up but that is essentially what I've read in the past as a retort to the "get rid of the penny" arguments.

I also remember reading about a subculture of people that have garages full of pennies gambling that we'll eventually kill it and their investment in the copper and/or collectors items will pay off ten-fold.

Gas prices wouldn't increase 5cents at a time -- your final purchase would just round up to the next 5cent amount.

Seems like a big pain in the *** to make all of that happen though...so why not just stick with a penny? People hardly use cash anymore anyway....

And all those 99cent stores would be ******.

Why would all transactions have to be rounded up? Most transactions involve multiple items, so it would be impossible for retailers to price everything so that the total would always round up.

makes it possible to collect sales taxes,no?

trivia: the sculptor who designed the Mercury dime that was in use back in the inter war years used as a model a bust he had done a few years before of a tenant in his apartment building in NYC, one Elsie Stevens. She moved out when her husband, Wallace, got a job with Hartford Insurance and moved to Connecticutt.

Wallace ended up being executive vice president of the Hartford but is better known for being awarded a couple of Pulitzers for his poetry.

When I was at UT one of my lit profs claimed he was the best American poet after Whitman and many poetry lovers consider him the best of the last century.

That's the only coin trivia I have for today.
