#1 Texas at #10 Baylor, Match 1

Baylor wins second match 3-1. Lots of Texas Fight in this one just came up a bit short. Funny thing is I don't feel too bad about this loss. We hit around 500 in the first set and loss...and over 300 for the match. Can't be too disapointed.

We outhit Baylor and played hard BUT lost the match because of our awful serving. When playing a top-notch opponent and going forward into tournament play, we can't give away 20 points on missed serves and expect to win. Our tough serving is generally one of our teams strengths but tonight it was a major weakness and allowed Baylor to steal the match. Hopefully this loss will benefit us as we move forward....a loss is a good thing sometimes as it serves as a reminder that regardless of how good we are, we are beatable if we don't take care of the little details. We need to finish the season strong and take care of business.

Did we have 20 service errors? I did not think our serving was awful, just did not get the 8-10 aces we average. Baylor played out of their minds in the first and fourth sets to win this match. I dont think Coach is too disapointed at our play. I couldn't/wouldn't pick a game to lose but I didn't want the pressure of an undefeated season going into the tourney. So here we go. We gonna reset and finish strong...Texas Fight!!

I keep saying this over and over. SA's may seen cool, but Texas is the only ranked team in the top 20 in SA'/set. All the others are a list of nobody's. Some of Melanie and Nalani's hardest serves come back even harder.

As good as Texas is, they don't need the SA's, especially at the expense of SE's. No way you best the best teams with 2 SA's and 5 SE's per set. I can believe it works if you have more SA's than SE's but only Asjia is close and only because she has a fairly hard serve she always gets in. That's all this team needs. If all our players could just serve like Asjia, Texas would be unbeatable.

Unfortunately, we did have 20 service errors to go along with our 4 aces. Otherwise, the match was a highly-contested level match in which both teams played well. I also feel the loss could end up being a "good" loss for our team because it is better to take a loss now than in the NCAA Tournament. The team goal is to win the National Championship and that goal is still very much attainable. We have tremendous talent but on nights when the serving is "off" we need to be able to dial it back a little bit and put the ball in play so that we have a chance to score with our high-powered offensive attack. I love watching our team play and I am pulling for them to win the National Championship this year.

There is so much to unpack in this post, I'm not even sure where to begin. Did you watch Friday night at all? That is the team we want and need to be to win it all. We didn't beat Kentucky last spring because we couldn't serve tough enough to get them out of system. We swept through the Big 10 in the spring because we did serve tough. Saturday night shows we can't get so aggressive that we give up 20 points and our misses Saturday night weren't even close misses. It's something to work on. But stating they don't need service aces... please just stop.

That was a tough match to watch last night. I felt like Parra was definitely off, both in her serving and passing. It seemed like she was in her own head. Not a good sport weekend for me between VB, FB, and now the Cowboys.

Oh well. Shake it off and keep moving. We've got a Big XII championship to win and I'm hopeful for the post season!

Of course you don't know where to begin. You don't know volleyball and you don't understand math. Texas does not need service aces to win. Texas does not need service aces to win. Services aces are a point. Texas needs 25 points three times to win.

I agree with the statement but it’s oversimplifying. Service aces (especially in high volume) mean more that the serving team is creating pressure on the receiving team. (If it’s just one or so it often is a mental mistake from the receiving team rather than actual pressure from servers.) But when a team serves with pressure the receiving team may get the ball up and not get aced but they can’t run their offense.

If you let a team be in system too much they get to easy kills. But yes we need to get the ball in.

Now that I can agree with. It has to be the right balance. And like I said, like Asjia. Guess who has scored the most points on her serve? And that's because she gets it in at the highest rate. If Melanie and Nalani would just take a little off and get it in it would still be enough to keep the other team off balance, yet we wouldn't be giving a free 5 points/match.

I said we would miss Morgan this year not only because she's better at defense than Sydney, but also because she got her serves in. Morgan got a whole lot of long runs serving last year, not because she had a real tough serve, but simply because she got it in.

Perfect time to drop our first match, in my opinion. It allows for harder coaching and deflates any notions of invincibility that might have been creeping inside some heads.

EDIT: I have absolutely no idea if any of our players have been feeling invincible. Only saying that IF they were, they probably aren't now.
